D1 got in but the finances can kill it, quite ungenerous…
Previously, she loved POP, talked to professors, including a person who runs musical ensembles she would participate in.
3.98 UW, will have 13 APs, the 6 so far are five 5s’ and one 4, ACT34, SAT 1510, both tilted toward EN/Lang. No huge international recognitions, etc. but a very solid cluster of ECs focused around languages and music.
Reject.
Daughter,
ACT 36.
UW GPA 3.98, W 4.6
Juror AP Cal BC, AP Phys 1, AP Chim, AP EURO, AP US, all 5, AP BIO, AP LAN 4.
Senor AP Phys 2, College math
Decent Essay, a lot activity.
@ChaseBank Shocking. But they are close to the top in the ‘secret sauce’ category, with POSSE, Questbridge, Match, Internationals… Too many STEM-oriented young women in the ED1 round? But with these stats, wouldn’t some semi-decent places like HYPS be a feasible RD option?
I’m so confused. I haven’t gotten an email and my portal still shows the checklist of items. Is anyone else having this problem?
do you see anything on your portal about a status update?
We are 15 minutes away from Pomona college, too may good score high school students.
No, not at all. Looks identical to how it has for a month now. I’ve emailed the admissions office so hopefully they can get back to me soon.
Accepted! So happy right now. Congrats to everyone else, and good luck to everyone who didn’t get in with your future applications!
Wow! Congrats @Baron1898 , crazy you had to wait so long!.
On another subject we can let future applicants know that the ^link we posted yesterday means nothing ahead of time.
hey congrats to everyone who got accepted! i was deferred from dartmouth ed and i’m considering applying to pomona ed 2. excited for you all!
Congrats to everyone who got accepted AND has been able to make it work financially. Unfortunately, while D got it, our decisively middle-class family will not pay $300k for it, so one spot just got open!
Ouch! @ArtsyKidDad, I’m sorry to hear about the FA situation. Just out of curiosity, was that even close to your NPC?
@otisp Well, it’s complicated because we are the only employees of our s-corp. We asked them for financial pre-read but they wouldn’t do it, yet they responded in a way that I mistook for encouragement. The way they treat your 529 money, it looks like the last thing you want to have. I admire their social mission, accepting so many kids bright who pay zero. But middle class - forget it.
What a rude awakening.
oh no!!! hope your daughter finds more affordable options
@butterfly1997 There is already a very specific, and very appealing alternative: McGill U in Montreal. It’s less than 30k US/year total for American students. D speaks fluent French. With her 4.0 UW the way they calculate it, admission is guaranteed. It’s the complete opposite of Pomona in practically every aspect, except for one: both are world-class institutions.
I don’t know your parents’ finances but if they fall somewhere between really rich and very, very modest, you may have a similar disappointment.
I have heard amazing things about McGill and I’m sure your D would do very well there if she ends up going!
My parents would definitely have to take out some loans if I decide to go to pomona so that’s why I’m still on the fence about ED 2
Thank you for the insight!
We wouldn’t take a loan for Harvard, let alone Pomona. I am yet to meet anyone happy that they borrowed a lot of money for a prestigious undergrad degree, seriously.
Good luck!
I’m very sorry that you weren’t able to get a better estimate of your costs before your daughter applied. We’re also definitely “stuck in the middle” and got temporarily bit by an end-of-year one-time income spike (talk about mixed blessings…). Luckily when our finances dropped to “normal,” Pomona’s aid increased substantially and was much better than what the other kids received at other schools (which all had loans in their package). I’m very happy that your daughter has a great alternative in McGill (visited there several times in previous lifetimes). And I definitely agree that undergrad is much too early to be taking on a heavy loan burden - Plenty of time for that in grad school!
@otsip I believe I thanked you for convincing me, without even trying, in a private message – but let me repeat it publicly, the way you talk about the place, along with other similar opinions, convinced me to accept their insanely high price tag, hoping my D will take advantage of the great education they offer, in an absurdly gorgeous place. Pomona '25. With little luck, we may even avoid loans.
Sorry to hear your daughter’s rejection. what major does she apply? those are solid stats. she will get in another good college for sure
