Pomona College

Anyone applying to Pomona for Fall 2007? Is it even worth it, with the 9.8% admit rate?...

Not really. :D

I was really interested in Claremont McKenna, which is just as good with perhaps a less preppy student body. However, the transfer admit rate went from being 30% to 10% this last fall, so that is discouraging as well.

I was really really really interested in CMC, but... yeah... :(

But damn the buildings are ugly.

I'm still thinking of possibly applying, because if you examine their past transfer rates, it's really variable.

For Fall 2006 they admitted 10%, for Spring 2006 they took 0, for fall 2005 they took 30%, for Spring 2005 they took 42%...

So it's obviously based on the space available which is evidently quite flexible.

"admit rate went from being 30% to 10% this last fall, so that is discouraging as well."

True, but Claremont McKenna's admission rate over the last 5 years, which is posted on their site, has fluctuated between roughly 30% one year to 10% one year, and if we rely on this established patern, they ought to accept a good percentage for Fall 07. This is, of course, a speculation. My suggestion for you is to apply nonetheless.

The campus itself is quite nice. It's not like the other LAs, which their colonial designs/gothic architecture, but the environment itself is pleasant. The claremont colleges are very secluded, and almost in a world of their own.

Is Pomona really that preppy? I always thought of CMC as pre-professional and Pomona as PC.

And there's a better chance of acceptance than Yale, right? Ugh. There's no other college in California that I want to apply to.

I don't know if one would have a better chance at Yale. You have to consider the fact that there a lot more people that apply to Yale as a transfer that then are applying to Pomona, so of course, you would expect them to accept a little more (although considering this, their transfer rate last year was extremely low nonetheless). However, this does not in anyway say that you have a better shot at Yale than you do Pomona.

If you really want to go, apply. Present the best application you can produce, and hope for the best. Good luck.

There is no great difference between CMC and Pomona in terms of how preppy one or the other is. I'd probably vote differently than the previous poster, but it's pretty much a crapshoot, and not a big deal either way given that you have plenty of 5C haven from that atmosphere. Visit :-)
