Parent57, I will not spend the time you obviously must have perusing the forums of the other 5C colleges to determine if your statement is factually correct. With your over 600 postings, you obviously find College Confidential an addiction. I have a freshman at Pomona who has four high school friends at CMC and Harvey Mudd. Everyone seems happy with their choices. Let the students debate amongst themselves in a forum meant for them.

P57, such a tiresome game you play.

For anyone unaware of P57, he is notorious. He is known on a few LAC boards and likes to stir things up; I think he is rather bored.

His most favorite method is to accuse people of doing what he is a master of. He accuses someone of disparaging CMC in which case he then defends CMC by disparaging the college he targets. Its a bit of a cat/mouse game he plays.

The Pomona board is filled with strings, take the time and read them and judge for yourself. The best opinions are the ones you make after researching the various threads.

To P57, you did not do such a nice job on the CMC board with the Wesleyan group but toward the end I thought you really pulled it together, maybe Xiggi grounded you? I like that other version of P57, can we have that one back? Asking nicely :)

Artrell, ok, I promise not to post here (is everyone sad) but it would be nice if the Pomona posters could take the advice of Sagehen 16 and use this forum to primarily discuss Pomona College. I like the way you sandwiched your insult with a complement. I guess it is more edible that way. I am not sure about this cat/mouse game, as I just participate in Pomona threads where the stereotyping is occurring. Probably about 2 or 3 threads in the last year. It was much worse when I first starting posting a number of years ago (I could provide examples, but I will spare you the details); the current posters are more respectful. Let’s hope it stays that way.

Actually, I am surprised that I have over 600 posts, but that’s a fraction of what many of the CC veterans have amassed. I think it averages to less than a post (1/2 a post) a day.

Mostly what I hear about Pomona is it is PC to a fault so I am surprised you would find any who would post disparagingly, either kids or parents. I cant say I am much on the CMC board but my DD showed me a FB post from some CMC kids aimed at Pomona kids and it was not very nice. She dismissed it as a prank as kids are known to do. She has friends on most of the campuses and enjoys spending time at each.

Nonetheless it is nice to know you have seen less disagreeable posts in the last couple of years. Remember to think kindly of the 98 percent of us who do behave ourselves. The Claremont Consortium has so much to offer and that is worth talking about.

I agree Artrell the consortium has a great deal to offer, but I do think there is some underlying tension between CMC and Pomona as sometimes exhibited in these threads. I was thinking why that may be the case and I did a little research and found this post from a Pomona poster in this forum a number of years ago. I have found many others, but thought I would quote this one because I think this poster was totally uninhibited and may have expressed what some others may be thinking and what CMC students may feel about their Pomona brethren.

“Pomona students have the reputation within the Claremont Colleges for being elitist, because we seem to keep to ourselves and also think we are the most “prestigious”. Most respond to this by saying, “well, we are…” - in terms of selectivity and rankings at least. (Btw, we also created the other Claremont Colleges, which I guess gives us the right to feel superior?). But besides that, I personally thing Harvey Mudd kids are ridiculously smart, and most of the “hostility” really goes to CMC since we are the biggest rivals with them. I have to admit, they also have a group of smart kids over there, but I (of course being biased) think Pomona is better.”

I think this attitude does exist between the schools and, of course, you then have the CMC students reciprocating in an equally unproductive manner. Here is a quote from the campus newspaper regarding the problems existing between the two schools at the last basketball game.

"Throughout the game, loud chants of “Fk Pomona!” rang out, to the dismay of a CMS coach policing the stands. PP fans were not any classier, flipping off the CMS fans and at one point almost getting in an altercation with a CMS player. There were plenty of “Puck Fomona” and “Fk CMS” tanks adorning fans in the bleachers.

At the end of the game, the courtside action really turned ugly. Fans on both sides erupted in multiple mel

It has always been my observation that sports events will bring out the absolute worst in people.

I recall a fairly recent post by you on the Pomona board regaling the win over Pomona by CMC in some sports game or another. I would hope you posted in good fun rather than the intent to rub it in?
The point is competition is part of life and you will find it anywhere whether it be at college or on the soccer field of your junior high school team. There is a good side and an ugly side, it brings out the best and the worst in people.

I have spent a fair amount of time at Claremont, more than one of my relatives has gone to college there. (Not Pomona nor CMC) And I am referring to a span of the last twenty five years; I do not think this is a really big problem for the consortium. Nothing you would not find in any typical campus of a large university where you can have heated competition within your own college departments.

But I agree with your point of harmony on this board. So lets start by living in the present and not dragging old posts from years ago. Leaders set by example :)

That post was said in jest. Although the melee at that game was somewhat extreme, I agree with your other points
