I've just begun looking at these schools and they both have grabbed my attention. What makes them different and which one would you choose?

There are a plethora of threads on this issue, search for them. Generally, CMC is focused in economics/ humanities while Pomona is more spread out. Also the student bodies tend to be different (Pomona being students who want to learn for the sake of learning) and CMC being (more business/career oriented and the stereotype is that they are bro-y and drink all the time, which from my experience is very, very true).

However, both are great schools, do the research for both of them.

I have done a fair amount of research about these two Claremont consortium schools, though I attended neither.

Pomona is far older than CMC and has a somewhat larger student body and a significantly larger alumni base. Pomona has a traditional liberal arts education philosophy. CMC’s liberal arts bent is distinctly practical and real-world economics and government-based. That is, Pomona’s forte is learning for the sake of learning, CMC’s is learning for the sake of living in the real world.

Having visited and toured both campuses last summer with my D, I have to say both were extremely impressive in their own ways. Which to choose between them is a matter of which “fits” you best. Visit, interview, and find out for yourself.

I agree with everything said so far.

One of the biggest distinctions between the two, in my opinion, is their social scenes.

If this matters to you, CMC has a considerably more liberal alcohol policy. (In terms of RA enforcement, at least.)

To add to Sephirot, students at any of the Claremont Colleges rarely run into problems of alcohol policy being too strictly enforced.

Unless they do something out of the ordinary while under the influence . . . ;)

If you are liberal Pomona. If not, CMC.

Rather, bigcheese means if you’re liberal and want to surround yourself with only a liberal perspective - Pomona is the way to go. If you care about ideological diversity, CMC is stronger in that sense.

^ That’s simply not true as there are a fair amount of conservatives at Pomona.

In order to get a good sense of each campus you really need to spend some time on each campus while students are around. The schools look somewhat similar on paper but are very different in terms of social life. Before visiting Claremont I was torn between Pomona and CMC but once I visited the two campuses I was convinced that Pomona was the school for me (and after two years here I know I made the right choice).

All of that being said, if you end up at one school and find you prefer the social scene of another… there is a little-known thing known as “campus switch”.

For instance, I’m a Pomona student who is currently living at Pitzer. All you need to do it find someone to switch with you. I know several students who have done this.

i’m planning on double majoring in Economics and either English or Philosophy, and I’m a transfer student… I applied to Pomona out of hs and thought I should take another look at all 5 of the Claremonts, and I’ve narrowed it down to Pomona and Claremont McKenna. Does anyone know which would be better for econ & english/philo?

CMC awards merit scholarhips including 4 or 5 that cover full tuition. Pomona does not.

The best thing about Claremont Schools is that you can take classes between colleges. So if you get into CMC, you can take classes at Pomona and vice versa. My friend is currently enrolled at CMC and most of his classes are at Pomona!

Pomona. CMC has more of a pre-professional atmosphere and curriculum. Pomona is the quintessential liberal arts college.

Pomona’s popular PP&E (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) major might be of interest to you.

yeah that’s what i’m applying into actually! the CM PPE program sounds amazing too, though it isnt a major and you may or may not get into it, so if i get into both then i’ll decide. >.<

You are mistaken. PPE is indeed a major at CMC.

In terms of may or may not getting into it, that’s true, however, acceptance rates are around 50%.

sorry what I meant was that I can’t directly apply into it when I apply to CMC so I’ll have to apply as an econ major and state that I want to switch to PPE, correct?

As a Pomona student with lots of CMC friends I can give you the summary:

CMC-- Preps you for job world. Easier classes. Lower average intelligence.

Pomona-- Barely preps you to be OK (not amazing) academically or job-wise. Harder classes. Higher average intelligence. We make jokes about taking CMC/Pitzer/Scripps classes because they are like highschool all over again. Mudd classes are the only other respectable ones.

why is it that cmc classes are easier yet prepare you better for the real world?
