D was rejected RD in state without WL offer - her only reject out of 10 schools she applied to. UWGPA 3.9/WGPA 4.4; IB track. It was not her top choice so no hurt feelings. Accepted to UCI and WL by UCLA and UCSD (her top choice for public in state).
wait listed. 33ACT . 35 SUPER SCORED. submitted
any ideas what to do next?
If you really want to go there, ask the admissions committee if they accept âLetters of Continued Interestâ and Resume Supplements. If they do, then follow the advice here: How to Write a Great Letter of Continued Interest
Be very clear and specific as to why Pomona is your top choice if it is. Sometimes you can also submit another letter of recommendation. I imagine doing this quickly can be beneficial vs. later, as it demonstrates your interest level.
Their Common Data Set from 2021 says they waitlisted 840 applicants. 570 remained on the waitlist. 27 were enrolled off the waitlist which means about 60 - 80 applicants were pulled off the waitlist.
Has anyone heard whether they are contacting waitlisted students?
Any WL movement?
Havent recieved any info yet⊠thought will get rejectedâŠ
Anything?
nothing ;/. this is so draining
Waitlisted from the waitlist. Lol.
@Poloboysmom , did your son end up at Pomona? If so, would love to hear how heâs doing!
He did end up at Pomona. When he arrived on campus for admitted students day, he was immediately sold (because of COVID, that was the first time heâd been there in-person). He said he just âfelt at homeâ there. I would say that he is doing well despite a rocky transition (moved into a dorm with no AC during an extended crazy heat wave, hated his orientation adventure, had the last registration time and couldnât get any classes he wanted, got sick with COVID and put into a 10-day quarantine the day before his team left for the East Coast to play at Harvard & Brown, just to name a few bumps in the road). Despite all of that, heâs not reporting anything negative that would be specific to Pomona. He loves the guys on his team, has already made friends with the people in his dorm, had a good experience with the Student Health Center when he needed it, likes the fact that he can eat at any of the dining halls around the five Câs, loves the five Câs parties, likes the neighborhood around campus and the Claremont Village, and says his freshman seminar instructor is doing a phenomenal job teaching them how to write at the college level. Hope this helps if you have a student considering Pomona College!
Just to clarify, he was not a recruited athlete but rather a âwalk-on.â
Thatâs great! Glad to hear he is having a great experience with so many of the critical pieces (health center, food, ID1 seminar)! Dare I ask about the orientation adventure?
I was glad to read your story since it sounds similar to our student as well (although, no water polo, which is probably an important factor!)
One more question about Pomona & Pitzer: one knock Iâve heard is they only attract âwealthy white kids (often athletes) and first gen kids to the exclusion of anyone in between.â Would anyone agree with that and say that the non-athlete middle class from public schools is not really there much?
My kiddo is a Black, middle class, non-athlete student from public school. Sheâs very happy there and has a more diverse group friends than sheâs ever had. She feels like everyone has a âthingâ whether is the arts, athletics or some unique side-hustle AND are smart and driven. As for the wealthy part, I think that statistically about 50% of the campus is full pay (which I would equate to wealthy), but not all of the wealthy kids are white. So no, from our experience there is no exclusion of âanyone in betweenâ white and wealthy to first gen. But again- our experience.
My kid is a white athlete, would not be considered wealthy, and she is very happy. Her friend group is diverse in every way-- types of major interest, race, geography, socio-economic, activitiesâŠStill early, but so far a very positive experience for her.
