Hi, I'm in my senior year in New Delhi and was recently accepted at the University of Chicago and Pomona.

Two years ago my boyfriend told me about Chicago as it was his number one (he got rejected) and we both fell in love with the uni for its intellectual breadth.

However, as the decision day came nearer, we learnt more about chicago through personal and internet sources. The environment and atmosphere that we had initially perceived was the very reason we applied. A quote about Chicago was:

"Chicago is not the place where the valedictorian goes, but the place where the guy who the valedictorian was intimidated by goes" or something like that.

I'm certain that this is definately an incorrect description of the student body of chicago. Now, being an international student, I have never visited Chicago and will most probably be unable to do so.

Several others (accepted and rejected) have shared similar concerns as the decisions were suprising. The people who were supposed to be a typically Chicago Student were rejected and vice versa.

Pomona on the other hand has emerged as a better option. Weather, etc. + my boyfriend will be at CMC.

However, My dream college was Chicago and Now I don't know where to go...

I would suggest posting on the general forum (you'll get a lot more responses) as well as on the UChicago and Pomona boards (you'll hear from current students who may have chosen one over the other).

well
ummm ide say what is said about u of Chicago is right.
The valedictorians dont go there, but the kids who just want to learn do.
It is supposedly one of the most intellectual college comapuses in the world (ill see for sure cause im doing their highschool summer program this year)

i would go to Chicago

yes they are both great schools
but ide say chicago is definately the winner.
and

if u decide to take my advice, maybe u could tell ur bf that to be able to pursue you dreams you feel that you need to go to U of Chicago, and if he isnt understanding, than maybe he isnt "right" for you

(im actually the bf lol nd speaking on her behalf, we discuss college a lot and know each others concerns etc.)

the bf part wasnt actually a decision maker it was merely a fortunate coincidence and a bonus! we were both lucky to get into selective LAC's which were in the same consortium, there was no planning involved and both our decisions are independent of each other.

I agree Uchicago has a great reputation but that reputation derives from its graduate programs mainly. Pomona does have its advantages of a usual LAC + the consortium advantages. But why would you say its a no-brainer. Since i have never visited..is there a huge difference in academic quality? would the teaching etc. be better at uchi?

I actually spoke to someone at Pomona who had his brother at Uchicago. The pomona students textbooks were written by a tenured uchi professor who lectured once in 2 weeks in his brothers class. But the professor never met his brother and didnt know him at all. He was merely a figure standing on the podium with a powerpoint and then left. This pomona student on the other hand has met this proffesor on three seperate occasions as a guest speaker with a small discussion group of about 20 students and on all three meetings dined with him in an even smaller group. Which basically confused me mroe

Pomona College is amazing. I disagree with people saying they'd choose U Chicago over it in a heartbeat, because these 2 schools are different and I don't think they give Pomona the respect it deserves as a premier liberal arts college. Small classes, amazing econ faculty, english faculties, cross enrollment in mudd or cmc for science or business etc etc, astronomical endowment, only behind HYP and Grinnell College (and a lot's spent on students), weather, LA, beach and snow in one day, 13th feeder school to graduate schools, big dorms, very friendly students the list goes on and on and on...

Having said that, UChicago is really where the nerds are. Very intellectual ones! Nothing wrong, in fact it's great! I'm a nerd too =) But you already said your dream uni is in U Chicago. Then go there. Nothing else should decide or hold you back. I'm assuming you've already laid the stats of both schools bare and gone through them over and over again. If you still can't decide, go with your dreams.
