Poor and Asian?

If you are poor and Asian how does that affect your chance at schools like jhu, cmu, nyu, cornell, dartmouth and chicago?. I have taken 2 jobs to pay for my parents bills and finances during the school yr and during the summer. Does being poor help?

Poorness helps yeah.

Asian hurts though so.. it sort of cancels out.

I don't think just being poor helps you get into college...aren't most need blind? That said, your responsibilities that you've taken on and your struggles that you've dealt with will definitely give colleges a perspective of who you are (which will certainly help). I think that shows a great level of maturity :).

Do you attend a high school that doesn't regularly send students to top schools? If so, you may want to find out more about Princeton. They're currently trying to get more students who come from schools that don't normally send kids to top colleges. OH, and definitely look into Quest or Quest scholars (I think that's what it's called). It's an extremely good program for low income students. Good luck!

well I wrote an essay about my current situation a bout the poverty that I have faced. I also wrote an essay about my struggle, etc. I tried to convey my situation in my essays so that admisison officers would know.

bump?!?!?!?

also I didnt list my ethnicity on my application.

Yes, I would say both factors (minority and low income) help. It will look good that you took the initiative to get jobs, too.

bumppppppppppppp

Being the first generation in you family to go to college is defintely a plus. It's no hook but will certianly help you uou alot.

well unfortunately my parents both went to college in India and my dad received his masters in the US. However, due to some misfortunes, we are very poor.

Sorry, I didn't realize you already applied to college. Scratch Princeton :).

I don't think being Asian cancels out chances at anything, but it doesn't help at all. Maybe in some cases, when there're like, a million Asians applying everywhere, it'd hurt, but I don't think Asian overrepresentation is yet to the point where being Asian is the EXACT opposite magnitude of AA (I submit, however, that it's the opposite effect, just not magnitude).

if you did not list ur ethnicity though, will that hurt or help yuo.
