I'm not even going to enter the porno debate here. But I think a lot of people agree that it has no sane place in a university, especially not in one with the reputation and integrity of UCLA.

A few probably not terribly eloquent points:

I'm not entirely sure what reputation has to do with whether showing a porn flick is okay or not, but whatever.

UCLA is also showing Pineapple Express, a movie that endorses (or at least about as much as porn endorses the degradation of women) marijuana use (illegal in the US, while porn is entirely legal for the vast majority of UCLA students).

"clearly degrades women"? If it clearly degrades women, there wouldn't be any debate on whether or not porn is degrading to women, which isn't true even within the feminist community.

"It stereotypes them as narrow-minded fiends without substance and without intellectual depth."

... don't pretty much all stupid humor movies do that? Wanna protest the showing of Tropic Thunder too?

UCLA isn't just showing porn for the sake of showing porn. They're also having a Q&A session. Personally, I'm more interested in that.

And I think you are all missing the point here, this is the sequel to the biggest budget porn movie ever, this is serious business. And also, don't go if you don't want to see it, go if you want to see it, it really is that easy and simple.

-- "clearly degrades women"? If it clearly degrades women, there wouldn't be any debate on whether or not porn is degrading to women, which isn't true even within the feminist community --

No, the debate isn't about whether porn is degrading or not, the debate is about the 'right of women to choose how to live sexually.' When someone is being raped on screen, that clearly is degrading. The rightness/wrongness of the choice of whether or not a woman wants to be portrayed in a rape scenario is where the debate comes in.

-- ... don't pretty much all stupid humor movies do that? Wanna protest the showing of Tropic Thunder too? --

Yes. That is one of the reasons why I'm majoring in film: to create movies in which humor draws from intellect and not cliche, shallow stereotypes. Besides the argument of "well all the other movies are doing it" resonates as trivial.

And I agree with imrightuarewrong (ironic for this sentence) in that if you support it go see it, if not, don't see it. However, that should not be a cop-out for a legitimate discussion on pornography.

Your original statement was:

"they turn around and support a medium [porn I'm assuming] that clearly degrades women."

Your response was:

"When someone is being raped on screen, that clearly is degrading."

Porn is not a medium, it's a genre. Unless you're talking about film, in which case, uhhh, okay, then...

W t f kind of porn do you watch? porn =/= male on female rape porn 100%. The vast majority of porn produced is not male on female rape porn.

What do you think about amateur married couple porn? happy fluffy female-targeted porn? solo porn with only 1 person?

"When someone is being raped on screen, that clearly is degrading."

I have to say that is a very skewed view. The actresses and actors in porn choose to go into it, whether it's for money, beliefs, etc. They are not forced to go into pornography; it is their own choice to become involved in the industry.

aww, that sucks for the porn actress who was there. i only heard she was rude...and no wonder. any details on her rude-ness or on the Q&A in general?

There was just one question that set her off - what is the porn industry doing to help out with human trafficking since porn is used in training videos for these men/women? She took it as an attack on her profession and the porn industry, leading to a discussion about how "most of that stuff" takes place outside the USA, and they can only do so much.

yea... she wasnt really rude. she seemed really nice and all. she gave an intelligent response, it wasn't rude at all, all of her other responses were really nice and she seemed friendly
