It says a portfolio is optional for communication studies, so would it hurt me if I didn’t send one? I don’t even know what I would send anyways. I take a communication arts and science training class for the past 3 years so I don’t know if that’s enough for my application
If you don’t have anything sepcific I don’t think it’d make sense to send a protfolio.
I applied to communication studies but I actually submitted a journalism portfolio, because that’s what I have the most work in. I ended my portfolio reflection by talking about how while I do love journalism, I want to study communications as a whole to get broader experience, and perhaps minor in journalism. I was accepted EA into the honors program with some scholarship so obviously my journalism portfolio didn’t hurt. If you have work in a similar field than I’d submit it because communication studies is so broad as it is, but if you don’t think you have anything worth sending then don’t worry about it. Good luck!
@runraven Hi, thanks! And if you don’t mind me asking, what were your stats? I’m trying to get a feel of how competitive this major/department is
@screenname3488 No problem! My GPA is 4.0 (unweighted) and 4.7 (weighted). Composite SAT: 2220. Just made it into top 10% off class. I actually go to an arts school and I’m a communications major there; I do journalism (editor-in-chief of newsmagazine) and film. However, I’m waaaay stronger in journalism so that’s why I submitted a journalism portfolio. I also have some other leadership positions.
I actually got an email from the chair of the communication studies department saying saying he likes “to personally reach out to the most promising of our accepted students” and he offered to answer any questions I had about the major, which I thought was really cool. That being said, it seems like my stats were a bit over the average or they liked my portfolio/essays or because I got into the honors program or whatever it was, if I’m considered of “the most promising” of the communications studies accepted students. (I really hope that doesn’t sound pretentious I don’t mean it like that!) So if your stats are “lower” than mine don’t worry! Every applicant is different so just put your best foot forward.
Thank you so much @runraven
