I am going to be a senior in the Fall and have to make a portfolio(architecture)

What are you guys adding to yours?

I was thinking 10 or so good drafts, 3ish watercolors, a few pointillism pieces, some photography, and a few sculptures/models?
What do you think?

Also, what is everyone using to add text and edit? I am using Photoshop and Illustrator (Adobe). How do I make this one big file to hold it all? I have some individual pages, but just how do I make in a full document with everything? Thanks.

Any ideas, suggestions, and things done in the past welcomed!

As far as your portfolio goes, I believe you’ve got the variety part down. Its always good to have a range of works that revolve around different media, and display your range of abilities; judging from what you’ve described, it seems you’ve got that down. In addition to that, it definitely wouldn’t hurt to post up your portfolio. Doing so will definitely help you get some very helpful pointers (it definitely helped me!)

As far as the submittal process, if memory serves me right, each individual work is to be uploaded individually. When applying to USC’s School of Architecture, you’ll be directed to the Arch page that allows you to submit the works that make up your portfolio. Along with each work, you’ll be asked to include details about it such as the medium, problem/solution, etc. I personally think the descriptive portion of your portfolio is just as important as your work. Arch admissions want to see the purpose behind your work, and the solutions to any problems you faced while assessing your particular project/artwork.

Although it’s definitely good that you’re familiar with Illustrator and Photoshop, submitting your portfolio in a single document won’t be necessary, since like I said previously, you’ll be uploading your works individually. Also, if you wanted to create a single file for your portfolio, you could always use illustrator (adjust page sizes accordingly) and modify each page to display each individual work. After you’ve designed the cover and pages to your liking, you can just export the file as a PDF, that way you’ll have a single portfolio file.

They like works that show both your creativity and ability to accurately observe and portray. Having a large variety helps, though i’m not sure about the photography.

As for putting it together, make one image for each page and turn it into a .pdf with a program like gfx2pdf or something. Also, they like to see photoshop work too - My portfolio was almost completely digital and I’m pretty sure that made me stand out a lot.
PM me if you want to take a look.
