Posse Launches Veterans Program with Vassar as First Partner

I went to the Posse Foundation Nominators meeting yesterday and they reminded us to get the word out that they have launched a program for vets returning home. I think it is really great and I hope that other schools get on board.

In an effort to increase the college-going and graduation rates of veterans at selective colleges and universities across the country, The Posse Foundation recently announced its Veterans Posse initiative, a new college scholarship program for veterans. Vassar College is the first institution to partner with the Foundation to enroll specialized Veterans Posses.

“With more than two million veterans currently eligible for the GI Bill and more expected to be added over the coming years,” says Vassar College President Catharine Hill, “we’re confident there are many veterans for whom highly selective colleges and universities like Vassar will be a great option.”

Using its unique recruitment method, The Posse Foundation will each year identify, recruit and train multicultural teams—Posses—of 10 veterans and send them to selective four-year institutions of higher education. The Posse scholarships will complement scholarships through the GI Bill to allow each Veterans Posse Scholar to attend college tuition-free and receive support through to graduation.

“Providing the opportunity for a top-rate college education for men and women who have served our country in the military is critical,” says Posse President and Founder Deborah Bial. “Posse is tremendously grateful to Vassar and President Hill for making this incredibly important investment in our nation’s future leaders by signing on as the first college partner.”

It is Posse’s ultimate goal to develop a new kind of national leadership network—one that is truly diverse and better able to reflect the voices of all Americans. Posse recognizes the immense value that veterans can bring to selective institutions of higher education, to the workforce and to the establishment of this diverse network of leaders.
