Possibility of Transferring

I am looking to possibly transfer next fall but my biggest concern is that my credits won't transfer. I'm currently a Bio/Chem double major w/ a Pre-Med concentration at the University of Indianapolis. I have about a 3.4-3.5 gpa right now but I'm learning that this school just isn't for me and I want to be somewhere closer to home/the place I see myself working in the future (I'm from the New England area). I am a freshman right now if that matters. As for college experiences, I am part of the Division II Track & Field team, a member of the Honors College, and I volunteered at the local YMCA. In high school, I was in the top 6% of my graduating class, I played 3 varsity sports, I was the Class Secretary, I did a lot of volunteering, I worked my senior year, I scored a 1620/2400 on my SAT, I scored a 29 on my ACT, I was part of the concert/marching band, and there are probably a few others things I can't think of right now.

I will have taken
Bio (155 & 165)
Chem (150 & 160)
(Both have labs)
Computer Applications (132)
English (101 & 102)
Music (110 & 116 - fine arts credit where I currently am)
First Year Seminar (don't think this will count)
Human Complexity (Sociology 200)
Calculus/Analytic Geometry (Math 190)

Schools I am currently interested in:
Assumption, Regis, Western New England, New England College, American International College, Springfield College, Boston University, Holy Cross, Northeastern, UMass Boston/Amherst/Lowell,

How do you think this credits would transfer to these schools and when would I find out? After acceptance, after enrollment, or can I find out earlier before I make too many decisions. I'm also interested in the transfer process from an out of state school to possibly an in state school and also my college now being so far away from where I want to be. There are just a lot of things on my mind and when they pop into my head I will ask them.

Thanks in advance.

Bump. Please help. Thank you.

Each college and university sets its own policy about transfer credits. Many of them will give you an estimate in advance if you ask, but you won’t know which credits actually do transfer until after you have enrolled and the registrar’s office has determined the equivalences. You may have to petition for recognition of one or more of these classes, so save every single scrap of paper that documents what is covered in class: syllabus, textbook, lab notebook, graded exams/papers/quizzes, etc.

Thanks happymomof1. Still looking for some advice. Maybe school specific if anyone has any.

Unfortunately, you won’t really know until after you are accepted, when schools send their credit evaluations. It seems like you have a reasonable chance of admittance to those schools, especially as a freshman with a strong high school record. Your standardized test scores may hurt you, but the fact that you were in the top 6% of your graduating class will probably mitigate that somewhat. I say go for it. You may even want to add a few reaches to your list.

Thanks for the info francisvdahlmann. I’ve been looking into some reach schools but I’m not sure if I’ll make the cut into any real Ivy Leagues and I don’t know many other reaches in the New England area.

That’s a good point, the region does make it difficult. I assume from your list that you’re not looking into LACs at all?

I’m up to looking into anything but I want to have a good focus on the sciences. These are just schools I have found that have the major(s) I want and are in the area I would love to study.

Well then, it sounds like you have a clear idea of what you want and I think you’re going to have some great options in the spring. I definitely wish I were as clear-headed as you about this whole process.

I’ll be applying for Fall
2012 but yeah having a good idea will probably help no matter what. Thanks for your help.

No problem!
