Sorry but that B- killed you. That’s normally an automatic exclusion as it is highlighted in bold on their site.
“Consistent B performance across all courses. Note that a B– does not meet this requirement. The admissions committee reviews grades in all courses, not just business courses.”
Perhaps they’ll make an exception given your strong Bus grades, but I wouldn’t get too hopeful. Talk to Kelley admissions and start looking at SPEA, LAMP, or bus minors. Those are all great programs.
*Note to others: This is why people should take Calc online or at CC and transfer it in to IU… No GPA impact.
The B- will definitely hurt your chances but you still have a shot. The only thing you can do is try to get as good of grades as possible this semester
Its not the end of the world. But it is a little frustrating that the Kelley folks on this site will not advise you about this.
They just say sorry!. What you need is advise. You have good grades and have a lot of options. You could transfer to Ball State Miller, IPFW Dohrmer and any number of highly accredited Business Schools.
So, what you need to decide is: Do you want a Business Degree or go to IU?
If you want a Kelley Degree this is probably your only clear option. But the others suggestion to get your grades up and try to apply is valid too, just a little hopeful and not borne out by history at Kelley Bloomington.
But if you want to stay in Bloomington (I dont blame you) you might need to take another track, get your GPA up to the 3.6-3.8 range Study like crazy for your GMAT and get your MBA with Kelley.
You still have a chance. I know of more than one person that was admitted with a B- in a course like M119 but had good grades in other courses - especially the business courses. Keep your grades up to close to straight A’s this semester and I think you really have a chance!
Also, with the advice to take courses online or at a community college - that advise really applies more to keeping up your GPA if you are in Kelley. There is no easy way to be a standard admit - if you bypass M119 you will just have to take another tricky combination of courses.
Transfer to IUPUI? @Goodkidsdad You are quite the shill for that school surfing around all the forums like an army recruiter with a quota. Give it a rest already.
OP needs to be realistic and line up plan B as registration is upon us. Kelley standard admission is more competitive than ever.
@scrabblemomb Bypassing M119 does not cause any tricky combinations, you just take any easy LA course and fulfill a requirement.
Sound advice going back years on this forum tells Standard Admits in particular to avoid the weed out courses M119, M118, Econ, etc. I’m just sorry the OP didn’t do that as they’d be a lock for Kelley if they had.
OP do keep us posted and definitely stay in Bloomington.
@IUBOOS I understand your frustration with @Goodkidsdad concerning IUPUI, but in this case transferring to IUPUI may be the best option. I think it’s better than transferring to Ball State or IPFW although Ball State does have a pretty good Entrepreneurship program.
Based upon what several of you have said, my impression is that the OP, at best, might have a 25% chance (too high, too low?) of getting in. Whatever percentage you think it would be, the OP has to decide if they are OK with a major in Economics instead of something in Kelley.
If they are not OK with a non-kelley based major, then they need to get the ball rolling seeking out transfer options and applying as a backup plan if they don’t get into Kelley. IUPUI says they have a deadline of May 1st for fall transfer. Ball State’s priority deadline has already passed so I don’t know if that is even an option.
@GraceDad I like your comments but can’t help thinking the OP chose IUB as much for the overall school as for Kelley. I know I did.
I think it would much harder to adjust to a new school than a new major. They would also have to apply to transfer now, make plans for housing, etc. all while waiting to hear from Kelley in June. Changing colleges within IUB would be much more straightforward.
I’m hopeful that @Superhero1 gets lucky and doesn’t have to make the hard choices. Even better would be for Kelley to consider GPA as a whole instead of the B’s or better criteria. OP is above a 3.6 using that criteria. Not bad for a non-DA freshman taking mostly Kelley classes.
I know Kelley kids (both DAs and SAs) who’ve gotten C’s and are still in the program since their GPA only took a little hit. It doesn’t seem fair to hammer someone who didn’t excel at the Kelley brand of Calc but did great in all the other business classes they took. I’m guessing the OP would be a great addition to the Kelley family.
@IUBOOS Just wanted to give a HUGE thank you to you and @iubaccounting for your posts on the various IU threads. Both of you have sacrificially posted on the various IU topics providing great insights from a student’s perspective.
As it relates to your post above, I would have to say that there is a significant percentage of people that came to IU with the intentions of getting into Kelley that would’ve not have chosen to come to IU if they knew they weren’t going to get in. Unlike most of other Universities with top business schools, IU’s overall ranking/reputation as a national university pales in comparison. I’m sure some people have done as you suggested and stayed at IU and changed to a non-kelley major, but I’m sure that there is a significant number that have transferred because the importance of getting a business degree from a highly ranked university was worth the pain of transferring. @Superhero1 will have to decide what is best in their situation if they don’t get into Kelley.
If I was in their situation and even if I was 70% sure that I would probably stay at IU, I would still apply for transfer to a couple of other schools to keep my options open. I would hate to get to early June when they will be notified about the Kelley decision and it then be to late to apply to other schools if they changed their mind and wanted to transfer.
@GraceDad No problem. People on here helped me out a lot when I was in high school and before I came to IU, and I enjoy giving advice so I do what I can to pay it forward
@IUBOOS I look for Kelley threads to try to help people. If you look at my posts they are supportive of both Kelley campuses. I am sorry that you are not.
Again, it’s true that IUB has higher criteria for DA and placement than Indianapolis. It is an awesome school. But Kelley Indianapolis is perfect for many kids. Maybe for the OP in this case.
@GraceDad thanks for being pragmatic. I went to IUB and loved it. My son goes to Indianapolis and is completely fulfilled. I think both are top notch.
Again, the question remains for OP. Do you want to go to Indiana? Or get a Kelley Degree?
@IUBOOS I have read the previous posts too - but there are no easy LA requirements to get into Kelley…a certain combination of courses are required, all of which could be tricky. You just have to pick the combination that is right for you. If you bypass the math, you will have to take another combination that may not be any better. Requirements have changed over the years, so some of the earlier posts no longer apply. There really is no easy path - but it is possible. Good luck OP!
Good luck @Superhero1 , I hope you get into Kelley Bloomington. It’s a great school and you will do well.
Please consider however, applying to Kelley Indianapolis (May deadline), and Ball State Miller as a fall back position just in case. No harm in hedging your bets.
You will notice that there is a Bloomington tab at the top of the page in case you want to compare. They are the same school, so they compare favorably.
I’ll be a freshman at IU in fall 2016. I’m attempting to be a standard admit to Kelley, what classes should I take at community college this summer before I go to Bloomington?
