Possible Rowing Recruit Chances

I'm a Junior who rows out of a small boathouse in Delaware and some on boathouse row in philly, i row both sides equally well, 160lbs 5'8" (trying to lose 5 lbs to become a lightweight) 2k is about a 6:50 and i hold a 1:52 split for a 6k (i think thats a 22:24). I have become deeply passionate about rowing (dad rowed at Elitle Rowing school and Grandfather was in the Olympics) and would love to row for Dartmouth if not any other ivy league school. I used to play hockey before injury and have just started rowing in the last 2 years. I also run long distance races like marathons and half marathons and hike a lot (AMC Member and volunteer)

I am looking to go into studying language as a major and possibly minoring or majoring in music. A very good family friend, now a mayor in France, used to teach French at Dartmouth (or as she called it Dartsmooth) but we arent sure if she left in a positive light, might try to get a recomendation from her maybe.

My School stats are:

GPA: should be a 4.0 or 4.1 w by the end of this year (freshman year issue to go on councelors note, severe family illness while in Hanover and i broke my leg in 4 places playing ice hockey missing several weeks of school and having a full leg cast for 6 months)
SAT's : W: 750 CR: 650 M: 700
SAT II's: will take Us History and English
AP's Junior Year: AP English, AP Us History, AP Art History
Ap's Senior Year: AP Chem, AP English 12th, AP Gov, AP Economics, AP French
My EC's include NHS, French National Honors Society, Philosophy Club, Staff Writer, Literary Magazine Editor, Student Council Executive Board, President of Polish Club and of French Literature Club, Interact Club, Jazz Band, over 200 hours of community service, Peer Mediator, L.I.N.K., SHOC Counselor, and have at least 2 hours of Peer Tutoring a Week. Run own music lesson buissness (employ highschool musicians to give lessons, percent of profits go to charity) I am also planning to do an internship with 2 yale graduate, college writing proffesors (one of which wrote for the NY Times), a language proffesor at University of Delaware, and a Cardiologist.

I am also very involved in Classical Guitar and take lessons from a college proffessor and am in the Finals for 2 Youth competitions, and have participated in Master Classes at Julliard and Peabody (i love polysyndeton)

How do i look and what else can i do??

I had to respond to your message as soon as I saw it because my son is a freshman lightweight rower at Dartmouth and he was recruited. He LOVES being at Dartmouth. This entire week the team is in Oak Ridge TN for spring training. When my son was a high school junior I took him to visit Dartmouth for the tour, etc. and we also arranged for my son to meet with Coach Perry, the lightweight coach. Coach Perry arranged for my son to do an official visit in the fall of his senior year with several other high school rowers. So, I think it is important to set up an appointment with Coach Perry sometime this spring or summer.

Coincidently, my son also did a lot with music, in his case piano, through high school. He had a CD made of himself playing several pieces and sent it in as part of the "arts supplement" to the application. We will never know if that CD helped him get in or not, but in your case I assume you'll send in something as a supplement.

Your 2k sounds great to me but I'll sned your message to my son (he doesn't look at cc anymore) and ask him if he has any suggestions.

Your SATs seem okay but you might want to take the ACT as well. My son took both and his ACT was equivalent to a higher score than the SAT so Dartmouth used the ACT score.

My son applied Early Admission and so did most of the other recruits. I think it helps your chances if you do, but you have to be sure that Dartmouth is your first choice.

As far as your weight, I think the definition of lightweight is different in college than in high school.

Have you been to any summer rowing camps? I think Coach Perry is involved in the Northeast rowing camp in Maine, but you should try to meet him at Dartmouth before then.

The only other thing I can think of is that my son tested out of his foreign language requirement but I think Dartmouth's foreign language department has an excellent reputation.

Good luck.

Thank you for your response, I am planning to attend Northeast this summer and i am defitnally scheduling an appointment with Coach Perry this summer. Please tell me wat your son thinks of my times and if i need to improve them any to be a potential recruit. I have also visited Dartmouth and met with the head of their music department and plan to send a CD in this summer and with my application. My dream would be to be a Big Green oarsmen so i appreciate any help that leads me towards accomplishing that!

Would anyone else like to comment?? Doesnt have to be about rowing specifically just how stats compare in general to those who generally get accepted.

Sorry it took awhile for my son to respond to me- he was having trouble connecting to the Internet in Oak Ridge but at any rate he said your times are great and that you should have trouble being recruited by a top school.

Sorry- that was a typo- he said you would have NO trouble being recruited by a top school.

thank you for your response and interest momofrower, without my recruit potential, how do my scores, ecs, and unique qualities (if u see any that could be a hook) standout and wat are there general chances

anyone have anything else to say??

Maybe you should try using another title for your thread-more of a general "chances" question. I am really surprised that I'm the only one who responded to you.

Hey, I was wondering how one would find out if a rowing coach at Dartmouth will be helping out with the admission process of if you are on your own to get accepted?

PS. i will be applying to Dartmouth ED this November

My son is now a sophomore at Dartmouth and he is a lightweight rower. He met with Coach Perry when we visited the campus during the summer between his junior and senior year of high school and then Coach Perry invited him back for an official visit in October with other potential recruits. I think the coaches will put in a good word for you with the Admissions Office which probably helps but I am not really sure how much weight they have. I suggest that you send an email to one of the coaches to see if you can get an interview. Meanwhile, if you haven't done it you should also fill out the recruiting form that is on Dartmouth's athletic department's website. If you have a good erg score it will elp you a lot. Good luck.

I met with Coach Perry in March of my Junior year. I was in loose contact with him over the summer via e-mail. After i visited again at the end of August, coach Kratochvil contacted me and asked me to fill out a questionnaire. I filled this out and he told me to keep him updated.

I'm not sure what to make of this because i am around 165 lbs and coach Kratochvil is the heavyweight coach. Is it irrelevant which coach i am in contact with, or does this mean that I should be a heavyweight?

F.Y.I i am 6'1, 165 lbs and my 2k is around 6:50, I am not sure if this is good enough to get help with admission. Do you have an opinion? Is this good enough to row lightweight? anything would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Your 2k seems very good to me but I'm only a parent and I don't want to mislead you. I'll forward your email to my son and see what he thinks.

Here is what my son said:

"tell him that there is a '12 with the exact same profile who was recruited for the lightweight team this year. It still depends on statistics of other rowers in his class who are interested in Dartmouth and only so many can get help with admission."

In other words, your stats are good because one of the freshmen had the same stats as you and was recruited. It just depends on who you are competing against among the other '13s. Maybe you should contact Coach Conley, the freshman coach. he might be playing a role in recruiting this year. in my opinion, you deserve to find out, one way or another, if they are helping you with admissions- but I don;t know how things really work. Good luck.

Thanks for the help...none of the coaches have told me yet that they are going to help me with admissions, im going to guess that i dont have a good enough SAT or erg score or somthing...i guess all i can do now is hope for the best.

ps. my SAT is 1770 600CR, 560M, 610W (retaking in October)...do you have any idea what recruited rowers are scoring in terms of their SAT's??

Your erg score is pretty decent. Your SAT is something else altogether.

Just try and do the best you can. I'd say, aim for a 2200.

Would it be possible for you to take the ACT as well? Many students do better on that test than on the SAT and Dartmouth accepts it.

I didn't see that this post went to page 2, anyways i have taken the SAT and got my results back. My score ended up dropping by 60 points so that puts me in a tough situation. I took the ACT yesterday and i am hoping to have done better. I am really not sure about any of this standardized testing stuff because coming from Canada, there is literally nobody to ask for advice about all of this. Do you think the admissions dpt will sympathize with my Canadian nationality or is there just no chance in hell with my stats?

Hey man, you still should have a couple more chances at taking the SAT - so I would study really hard doing practice tests and drop the hammer (last 500 meters in a 6K - you should know this).

Admissions will not sympathize - because other Canadians are still able to pull off competitive scores (no pun intended).

The very best of luck to you.

~A fellow Big Green rower

I do have a couple more chances at taking the SAT, but i sent of my ED application about an hour ago so as of now I already passed the finish line. I'm thinking that i will have to use what i have for my SAT. I put down Dartmouth as one of the schools for the ACT to send to but i don't suspect that it'l reach in time. The only reason why i thought that they might sympathize is because the only other person to go to Dartmouth from my school had the same SAT's as me. Nobody that I have ever talked to has scored above 2000.

Is it really a big deal to have ****ty SAT's?. Every time i read about the SAT's and applications they always say how they are just "one small part" of your application. Or is this just BS to make you feel better?
