The shooter is confirmed dead, but was wearing body armor. Makes me wonder if the shooter had plans to shoot more than one victim.
Horrible!
So sad. UCLA is also very dear to my heart.
So sorry a very accomplished engineering professor seems to have been killed. Thankfully, the shooter only went after him and did not kill others as well. It is terrible, nonetheless.
MODERATOR’S NOTE: Please don’t turn this into a debate on gun control. Stick to the specific subject of the thread so I don’t have to close it.
My daughter texted to her dad and me that one of her best friends from high school had texted her from the building next to where the shooting happened. They had seen the gunman from the window. My daughter’s friend and several other students and a TA were in a room without a door lock barricading themselves in. My usually level-headed kid was obviously frantic at the idea that her friend was in danger and there was nothing she could do. I hate that this has become a not-uncommon occurrence on college campuses. My niece was at VTech during that shooting, my son had several friends at NIU during that shooting. This is such a sad state of affairs in our society today.
I understand CC not wanting a debate regarding gun control. As such there is probably not much that can be said. I got the call from the police when a family member died from gun violence. I had to tell the family. It was one of the most difficult days of my life. Having a kid at UCLA brings back those memories today. I wish we all didn’t have to constantly relive these nightmares at different schools around the nation. The victims family from today will suffer tremendously from this for a long time.
Regardless of our beliefs on guns, horrors like this is despicable. I was on my campus today for my orientation in engineering when I read CNN… i wish I never have to live through something like this or family members. I feel sorrow for the families there at UCLA.
One of my kids went to Virginia Tech, but started there after the shootings. It is still upsetting to think about it and is still remembered at every anniversary. The memorial on campus is heartbreaking. I still remember where I was when the news broke, the mounting death toll that was being reported, the worry as we knew kids there at the time. So sorry UCLA has gone through this today.
@collegedad13 - I felt like my heart stopped beating when I looked down at my phone this morning and saw the text from my Bruin, “active shooter on campus. Am locked down at X.” I just want finals to be over, and to be able to hug my kid again.
Why don’t they release the names of the victim and the shooter? What is wrong? Obviously, they should know the name of the Professor who was gunned down.
???
RIP William Klug, professor of Engineering…
The name of a professor is out there but the coroner has to release the name, I believe I saw. Probably to be absolutely sure, notify family members ,etc. Since it has not been confirmed , I don’t think it’s a good idea to mention the name since it has not been officially announced.
Oh, @Happy2Help , Just saw your post so guess the news is now official. He was a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering with a Master’s from UCLA and PhD from Caltech.
“Why don’t they release the names of the victim and the shooter? What is wrong? Obviously, they should know the name of the Professor who was gunned down.”
I’m sure you’ll get it in due time. It’s a little bit unseemly and tacky to “demand” it - let’s let the families / loved ones know first. It doesn’t change one bit about the story whether or not you know the name of the professor.
Sheer, utter, unimaginable waste of what I can only presume was a brilliant life. To think of all that knowledge he will no longer impart to future students. RIP Professor.
@prospect1 Agree. Such a waste. Very sad.
Some less reputable sources claim the shooter was upset about grades. If true, is this what we have come to? Little Johnny doesn’t like his grades so he feels the need to kill his teacher and then himself? If so, teaching will become one of the most dangerous civilian professions out there.
Student homicide against faculty is not unheard of, but not common:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Streleski
In terms of risky jobs, this list indicates that fishing, with 131.2 deaths per 100,000 over 7 years (or 18.7 deaths per 100,000 employee years), is the riskiest job.
http://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2015-dangerous-jobs/
Presumably, this does not include those with very small numbers of employees, such as one with 3524 deaths per 100,000 employee years, but which has had only 43 employees (8 of whom died on the job) over 227 employee years so far.
My son and his wife are both UCLA grads, he in mechanical engineering where the shootings took place. She graduates from their med school on Friday. Tonight was to have been their senior banquet, a huge event to culminate their four years of hard work together. It has been canceled, as have all other campus events. There’s really no chance to reschedule as they’ll all scatter this weekend to begin their residencies. I know this really isn’t all that important at this time at UCLA…but I still am feeling sad for these students.
That is so sad, @jacquelynw . Unfortunately, one disturbed and/or disgruntled person’s actions have a ripple effect on many other lives.
