My brother direly needs some advice and assistance. He is a junior and currently attends a 4 year college. His major is biology with a minor in mathematics. His freshman and sophmore grades were extremely poor.

his science grades (unsure if english and math counts)

physics 1- D (will retake if permitted)
physics 2- B-
biology 1- B+
biology 2- B+
General chemistry 1- B
Calculus 2- B+
Calculus 3-C
Linear algebra- (w) first time, retook it summer time (B+)
english 1- C+

Questions:

If my brother ace last 2 years (assuming all A's), will he still HAVE to apply to SMP or post grad to make up for his less than stellar grades his first 2 years?

What can he do to increase his chances to medical school? will doing research, extracurricular activities, volunteer work at hospital, internship, work experience help?

What other course should he take aside from organic chemistry before taking MCAT and applying.

please feel free to leave constructive criticism and please be completely HONEST and harsh. Thanks

What is his current GPA? Looking at those grades, it looks like he’ll have to do a SMP. People don’t go from 2.8 students to 4.0 students overnight.

Research, volunteer work, etc. are things he’s supposed to be doing. By doing those things, he’s only keeping up with other premeds.

He’s going to need gen chem 2 along with orgo before taking the MCAT.

I forgot to mention his current cumulative GPA is a 2.7. Does he need another english?
Thanks, norcalguy!

Why were his grades low?

Why would a med school accept him when they have more than enough apps from students who didn’t “mess up” for 4 semesters?

It is highly unlikely that a student with those grades would oh-so-suddenly become a 4.0 student.

I don’t know what the solution is here. I would think taking some time off from school, putting some space between the low grades and the high grades.

Again, why were his grades low?

Yes…math grades are calculated in science GPA. English is counted in cum GPA.

Post bach? Well there was Handel for a few years, then Mozart, then Beethoven, etc etc etc…
