Post Here When the Scores Are Up!

Essays Are Up!

I got a 10, and my combined English is a 30 (which is weird, because my regular English was a 31, so I thought a 10 would bring it up).

-Adam

yes 11! but i thought my combined english/wiritng would go up a couple points

College Kid, I'm not gonna lie, odd scores kinda blow, because it means had you had a different grader, you could've gotten a 12.

I got a 9, predicted 8.

For those who got 10+, how long were your essays? Mine was 2 pages, plus a conclusion on the third page. I'm kinda thinking I need to be closer to three full pages.

iirc, my essay was about 2 pages in length, maybe a tad over. Although, I have a feeling a longer essay would have gotten me a 12 (I got a 10).

Adam, my D had a 34 English with a 10 essay, for a writing score of 33. Seems like a 10 takes off 1pt. from any english score to make writing score.

I think one of the most key elements to an 11 or 12 is insight. Or, as they put it 'examine the further complexities of the issue'. I don't really know what to do about this, because I can never manage to think of anything in time.

EDIT: That would seem to be about right. My 9 with a 34 English took me to a 32 combined.

Chiron, I managed a 12 with 2 and half pages, although I normally write about 3. A funny thing happened during the test, I thought we only had 25 minutes to write our essays (like in the SAT!) so rushed and made my essay a bit shorter than normal. Then I had a ridiculous 5 minutes to edit... that was not a good idea. Anyway, it definitely depends on the size of your handwriting (mine's about medium). I don't think you 'need' 3 full pages, but I do think it's a good idea to write more than 2 at least.

Received the scores today.

Glad to have it done. Composite went up 3 points from the April test.
(I worked on some practice tests this summer.)

Good Luck to all retaking the test.

"Adam, my D had a 34 English with a 10 essay, for a writing score of 33. Seems like a 10 takes off 1pt. from any english score to make writing score." Yes but a 10 is below a 34 in %ile and goodness, but above a 31, so I thought it would go up.

I do not think certain writing scores "take off" from a certain whole.

had a 35 english and a 9 composite that brought my English and writing score down to32. ouch

Apparently, science was mad hard this test because the 99th percentile extends all the way down to a 32. Reading, the 99th percentile goes down to a 33. Does this happen every test, or is it because this month's questions were significantly harder?

No, no, no. The percentiles are based on test scores from the previous three years. They have absolutely nothing to do with scores on this test or how hard it is.

It's the conversion of raw scores (number of correct answers) to scale scores (on a scale of 1 to 36) that corrects small variations in test difficulty, not scale scores to percentiles.

No. Go here http://www.actstudent.org/testprep/ and look at the pdf Preparing for the ACT, page 72.

So if I requested schools that I wanted my scores sent to, are they automatically sent there now, and will that be in time for EA?

If you requested them when you registered, they automatically go out as soon as your scores are available, including writing if you took it. If the EA deadline is Nov. 1, they should arrive with plenty of time to spare.

Is there anyone else who has NOT gotten their test scores yet???
I called ACT yesterday and they said that most scores should be up by saturday night. Whats going on?? Do they always put scores online intermittently??

32 composite
