Potential extra scholarship offerings from Alabama?

What is the likelihood of earning a scholarship through Alabama if you go in as a Presidential+Engineering scholar?

I will live off campus year 2-4, so I’m not sure if I were to even earn any money whether I could spend it or not. Side note: will outside scholarships apply toward off campus housing costs?

Thanks!

Yes, outside scholarships can be applied to off campus housing in a round-about way. How this might work is your grantor posts an outside scholarship check to the university. It sits in your UA account and is applied to any expenses on your account, such as tuition and fees. You will be refunded any extra amounts sitting in your account in excess of what you owe. It is a way of getting your Pres/Eng’G scholarship back to pay for other things. The wording of the Pres scholarship is ‘up to the value of tuition’, so it can be applied to anything you owe, tuition or otherwise. If outside scholarships cover part of your tuition/fees, then the remainder of the Pres $$$ is refunded to you by UA.

It has been stated many times that students who receive the Pres scholarship are often not in line to receive other scholarships. Some posters on here have said they have received other, departmental scholarships, as well as small alumni scholarships, but that’s about it. Remember to re-apply for scholarships (via your mybama) once you are a freshman. Deadline is usually Mar 1 for the following school year. Again, these will be small amounts, perhaps only $500. If you have the stats and essay-writing skills, applying for outside scholarships is encouraged, especially with the industry group(s) in your field of study. Good luck!

@aeromom What other ways are there to save money? Is being an RA a good one? What is covered by being one?

@Jpgranier , there is a thread (currently) on “Actual room and board costs…” which can help (see link below). Post #13 therein mentions two other threads on saving money at UA and any college. Good luck! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-alabama/1954114-actual-room-and-board-costs-for-years-2-4-p1.html

To answer the RA question, you might find previous info using the search box (magnifying glass next to page numbers on main forum page). Just a cursory search landed me these previous posts:

@aeromom wow that doesn’t seem like you’re compensated enough! I was looking it up and it’s basically a full time job
