I haven't read P&P for a class since 10th grade, but I watched the new version to review for AP Lit and was hoping it would be good for the essay. In the end though, I wrote about Lord of the Rings (that counts as literature, right?). My English teacher had warned me repeatedly not to write about Harry Potter on the AP--I guess she knows me too well :)

Hah, yeah, my English teacher explicitly told our class no Harry Potter on our term papers. I wrote about Life and Times of Michael K by JM Coetzee (South African Nobel Prize winner) for mine and then it turned out to be DEAD ON for the AP country setting essay. The main character even calls the fertile country earth his god.

Whoever said they got a little stuck on the first one... me too, it took me longer than usual to start writing... but once I did, it really went well.

Oh, and don't worry, the entire male population of my class cursed P&P to oblivion too.

Ditto. I think that turned out to be the best of my three answers (which isn't saying much, but w/e).

Strange. The two guys in my class really didn't object too much to P&P (iirc, they actually liked parts of it)... though being a significant minority (8 girls and female teacher) may have had something to do with that.

Our class didn't read P&P, I'll probably end up reading it during the summer. :D

we're reading it right now...our teacher gave us a choice b/w that and In Cold Blood (capote). He told the girls to read P&P and the guys to read ICB.

I never got the sense that any of the guys in the class didn't like the book. Then again, it was summer reading, so its harder to tell...

mm...i'd say most of my guy-friends are not fans of pride and prejudice

Eh, it's okay, in my opinion; I like Austen's wit, but I can't appreciate the novel as a whole to the degree my sister or some of my [female] friends do.

My brother loved Austen ... as does my dad ... so I just put it down to the fact that the guys in my class have all this fake machismo that they demonstrate by demanded an "exciting plot" in their chosen literature.

On the other hand, one of my guy friends LOVED Age of Innocence ... a strike in his favor ...
