Im a senior mechanical engineering student with internship experience in the powerplant industry. I want to continue in the powerplant industry when i finish school. I plan on getting my masters degree in ME but im not sure what i should be studying. Any advice from someone working in this industry would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Wouldn’t what you need to study depend on the type of power plant you wish to work in?

Coal-fired power plants. I haven’t found any master degrees with a focus on power plants.

Some of these schools used to have programs related to electric power engineering, don’t know about now:
Missouri S & T, Purdue,U Illinois,Ohio State, USC, RPI

Basically any major engineering program within the American Electric Power service region should have something, I would think.

You could research where the major components are made, find the closest major universities, and see if there are relevant programs there. For example GE used to make major power equipment in Schenectady, which is near RPI. Again, don’t know about now.

If you’re daring, you could cold call people at Black & Veatch, Burns & McDonnell, Sargent & Lundy, AEP, Bechtel, Stone & Webster, Burns & Roe, etc and see if someone at these places would address your questions. While you’re at it, also ask them all what schools they recruit at on campus for Master’s Mech E grads.
