Anyone familiar with the PPE (Philosophy, Politics, and Economics) major at Pomona? Is it considered extremely challenging since you have to take courses from three different subjects? Have most students decided to change their major to focus on only Philosophy, Politics, or Economics?
It has a few more requirements than some majors, so you can’t take as many electives as you could majoring in just politics, philosophy, or economics. I haven’t heard anyone describe it as particularly challenging, though. I’ve taken classes with several of the professors associated with it, and they’ve been absolutely fantastic.
I decided to stick with a traditional Econ degree but took many of the courses in the PPE track anyways as electives. All of the classes I took were great and dovetailed nicely into each other. You’re going to get a very public policy oriented view of things, which means you’re going to ‘miss out’ on the more corporate aspects of economics, but I did a full econ degree and never took anything ‘corporate’ beyond basic accounting and industrial organization.
Don’t stress too much about choosing your major before you get to Pomona. It’s completely normal for students to not pick a major until sophomore year or to switch between majors at some point. Your get a faculty adviser who will help you pick
From what I understand, the PPE major at Pomona is more like a minor in each subject.
