Pre-ACT results -- 9th grader

My son took the Pre-ACT in October 2018 as a freshman (his school does Pre-ACT in 9th grade instead of 10th). We just got scores back and he received a composite score of a 25 with zero preparation. Breakdown was Math 19, Science 26, Stem 23, English 21 and Reading 32. I’m trying to figure out if this is a good score and trying to get a handle on his predicted score as a junior when he takes the real ACT. I believe the Pre-ACT is taken mostly by 10th graders, so I’m wondering if his predicted range of a 26-29 on the ACT would actually be higher since he took it fall of his freshman year. Clearly his math and English are low and I’m hoping they will go up significantly as he continues learning math and through some test prep. Thoughts?

your thoughts are accurate…and yes his range should be higher…not to mention preparing and taking practice tests etc. would guess he should expect low 30s

Whether his math score improves after this school year will depend on which math classes he’s taking–is he covering subjects that are included in the ACT? If not, you’ll want to supplement his math classes in some way, depending on which schools you’re hoping he’ll be competitive to get into. That might be a first step for you…look up the student admission profiles at the college/university where you hope he’ll be able to get into. You can also search “What math subjects are covered in the ACT” and then check whether the course(s) he’s taking will be helpful in preparing for the ACT. If not, you’ll have to supplement his learning.
