Pre-College Programs

I was recenty invited to the 2011 Summer@Brown. How does participation in this program affect admission to Brown and other high-level universities?

It’s unlikely to positively impact your admissions to Brown or other top colleges, though it can be a valuable experience in and of itself.

I was wondering this too. I guess this will help when I apply to Brown becaue I will actually know the campus.

High level colleges are looking for you to spend your time in a worthwhile manner. It might be a summer session at Brown, it might be serving ice cream at Dairy Queen or being a life guard at the beach. Just be constructive.

But don’t be fooled into thinking the $4-5000 program fees will buy you into any special consideration – it won’t.

I know what you mean T2. I guess at the Ivy League level demonstrated interest doesn’t play a part in admissions.

Demonstrated interest is very important, particularly at Brown. Attending a summer program at Brown doesn’t really show demonstrated interest, just that you had the money to pay for the program. The professors aren’t necessarily Brown ones, your fellow students aren’t Brown students…Demonstrated interest comes through in your essays, your interview, etc.

These program can help you “fall in love” with a school, though. It does show demonstrated interest if you construe it that way. The key to anything you do is how you construe it in your application. In that sense, even being Mother Theresa can sound like a do-nothing job, and working as a bagger in Publix can be made to seem like a Herculean effort, so what matters more than what you do is how you say it.

I did this program in 2010. I took two classes: one teacher was just from Rhode Island i guess, and the other was an actual Brown teacher. I didn’t write my essays about my experience, but I shared it with my interviewer, the Brown teacher wrote a short rec, my ra wrote me a supplemental rec. Most of the other students who did this program with me wrote about their summer on Why Brown or even on personal statements and they didn’t get in… But going there is suppose to enrich your interest in brown for you and perhaps motivate you to do your essays, allow you to express better and what not… for you to learn more about Brown. I also went to the wc for some help. it’s just what you make out of it.
