Pre-Law Hopeful - Please Help!!!

Hey guys, I haven’t quite decided where I’d like to go, but I’ve made a list of my top ten ideas. I’m completely open to any and all suggestions. Thanks! I’m sort of confused on High/Low Reach, Safety, and all the other terms. Can someone please explain those to me? Due to my GPA and ACT, I’m guaranteed a free ride at OU and OSU, so those are my backups. I hope for something a little more prestigious. Thank you!

Background:

White male

Junior

Attend large (~ 1200 students in class) public school

Resident of Oklahoma

Academics:

GPA: UW 3.93, W 4.83 (I’ve had two Bs in my high school career.

The first was on the edge: something like an 89.3%. My teacher’s lack of faith in me kept me from raising the grade. When the semester final came along, she told me that I had little hope in getting an A. 95% of the students who took the final made As.

As for the second, it once again came down to the semester final that would decide whether I earn an A or a B. However, the week of the test, on May 20, 2013, an F5 tornado touched down in Moore, Oklahoma. One of my close friends and I drove to Moore the next morning to help clean debris and give aid to those affected. The final was given while I was trying to help the people of Moore.

AP: USH (3), Physics B, Lang & Comp, Environmental, Euro, Will take more next year

ACT: C (35), E (36), M (33), R (36), S (35)

Class rank unknown, but very high

Hardest possible courses

Extra-Curriculars:
- NHS
- Eagle Scout
- Drum Major of a very accomplished competing marching band
- Jazz

I’m not sure what else really needs to be here, so I apologize. I’ll answer any questions!

Yale

Harvard

Princeton

Stanford

Columbia

Chicago

Berkeley

Notre Dame

USC

Cornell

Like I said, I’m not firm on anything. Please let me know your thoughts!

I think you have shot everywhere; your stats are very good. However, consider this:

YHPS are reaches for everyone. So I would consider those your reaches.

The other six, IMHO, would be matches, although most of them high matches. Most of these schools are very selective.

I would apply to your list of schools, and then add OH AND OSU as your safeties.

If your college GPA is anything like your high school GPA, and if you do as well on your LSAT as you did on your ACT, you will do just fine with regard to law school acceptances.

Also, if you haven’t already done so and are able to, visit as many of these as you can to get a feel for what you might like (since you are very open to anything at this time.)

Good luck!

Bump your old threads before creating new ones. Just FYI.

AlwaysLearn,
Thank you for the advice and comments!
Buggie,
Sorry! I wasn’t sure if the thread got deleted… I guess it just got buried. Again, my apologies.

It’s nothing, and I hope I didn’t come across too cold. You can see a list of all your posts here: [College Confidential - Search Results](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/search.php?searchid=50937781)

As for chances:

HYPS: Reach
Cornell: Low Reach
Columbia/Chicago: Low Reach/High Match
USC/ND/UCB: Match

Don’t worry, no offense taken.

If it matters, I’ve started two businesses. The first is lawn mowing. I maintain five yards every week throughout the spring, summer, and beginning of fall so I’ll have spending money during the offseason. The second is a penturning business. I’ve made hundreds of writing pens from wood, antler, and accrylics; however, this is mostly a free time activity. The enjoyment I get out of it is worth more to me than the money.

Are these things I should put on an application?

Penturning sounds amazing. Unique. Awesome. Yes, of course, put those down, probably penturning first.

Your stats look very impressive, particularly your ACT and weighted gpa. You’ll have a shot at all of these of course but they’re still reaches(HYPS). The other universities all look to be low reaches or matches.
I had a question though, what courses did you take freshman, sophomore, and junior year? (you’re a junior right?) If you can fit in your humanitarian efforts with the tornado help in your essay you should totally talk about that too, that looks very nice and humanitarians area always loved everywhere! Good luck!

Harvard: Reach
Yale: Reach
Princeton: Reach
Stanford: Reach
Cornell: High match
Berkeley: Match (can you pay full-freight?)
Notre Dame: High match
Columbia: Reach
U Chicago: Reach
USC: Match

Here is some advice for law school: get a high GPA (3.7+) as an undergrad and then get 172+ on the LSAT; this way you can get into T14s.

Messifan,

 • Freshman: Band, German, PreAP Geometry, Oklahoma History & PreAP US Gov (1/2 semesters), PreAP Biology, PreAP English
 • Sophomore: Band, German, PreAP Algebra, AP US History, PreAP Chemistry, PreAP English
 • Junior: Band, AP Physics B, AP Environmental Science, AP Language & Composition, AP European History, PreAP Precalc
 • Next Year (Likely): Band, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP Literature & Composition, AP Psychology

Catria,
I really appreciate the input! Does full-freight mean without any grants or scholarships? If so, then the answer is no. My parents don’t discuss their income with the kids, but I believe we’re eligible for a large portion of federal grants.

Thank you, everyone!

Yeah, they’re asking if you could afford a full-pay Berkeley. Given teh situation the Cali budget is in, the UC’s only hand out aid to Cal. residents.

Which two classes did you get B’s in (sorry for the persistent curiosity). And did you read the link I gave you in the other thread?

One was APUSH. The other (tornado relief) was PreAP Chemistry.

I did check out that blog. It was an interesting read. Surprising to say the least.
