Okay, i got my choices down to these three.
I have been awarded the UCB Regents scholarship. I live close to UCB and would prefer to stay close to home (emotionally speaking). But the question is (disregarding emotions for a bit) which school is best for pre-med?

someone please help fast i really need to make a decision!!!!

well i think alot depends on what atmosphere u like. if u like large university type colleges - berk is the way to go. if u like smaller university type colleges - duke is the way to go. and if ur more of an academic, id go with jhu. jhu was actually my second choice but i decided to go with my first choice due to location. have u visited all 3? baltimore is cold.. lol

theyre all 3 excellent schools and they'll all take u far. does $$ matter?

For you, BERKELEY! Save money for medical school. You're a very strong student if you're a Regents scholar. You'll do well. Congrats on your scholarship and acceptances.

^ From an academic/prestige standpoint, it will be argued. But I say,
Berkeley = Johns Hopkins = Duke

Keep in mind though, Berkeley's undergrad environment is different. You will get more attention if you go to Duke or JHU. Berkeley will provide same opportunities, you just have to be more independent and pursue them for yourself.

First of all, go on to the website and read about their medicine department. There's a hospital near by or oncampus that gives undergrads the opportunity to research things such as stem cell. The hospital itself is ranked number one for its research and facilities. Basically alot of work you would be doing as an undergrad is similiar to what you would be doing in medschool. There's no actual "pre-med" undergrad so you'd have to probably choose something like chemistry or biology to do your undergrad in. If money is not a problem, then seriously consider JHU otherwise Berkeley is great too. JHU is ranked number 2 for med school so you can always consider that as an option in the future.

p.s please excuse my lack of typing/grammer skills

Duke is usually known more for biomedical engineering as opposed to a pre-med oriented discipline, although its program is, as you would expect, also excellent.

I would go with Duke hands down for pre-med. It will give you the best chance of getting into medical school (and a top medical school). Hopkins is not a great place for pre-meds. You have to think about the percentage of class that is pre-med at Hopkins and likewise the percentage of class the school needs to discourage so that they can weed out the weakest students and put the best into the med school applicant pool. I am assuming you are going to major in a science. If you are doing biomedical engineering or bioengineering or something of that nature it's a no-brainer -> I would go with Duke. If finances is an issue you can consider Berkeley but it is a TERRIBLE place for pre-meds. You should be thinking about what school will put you in the best position to get into the best medical school possible. I'm not saying that is the only factor (obviously); there are personal reasons, campus culture, and many other things to consider but Duke is the obvious choice here followed by Hopkins and then Berkeley.

hmmm..."davida1"...gave a rather emotionally biased opinion with a lack of solid data...
im still leaning towards UCB. i also just realized that both UCSF (undeniably, a top tier medical school) and CHORI (excellent research facility) are located next to UCB. Looks like research opportunities are aplenty!
I already kind of understood Johns Hopkins was kind of below both these, so the real choice was only between UCB and Duke, but now I think I will be a bear.
