Pre-Med (Chem, Bio) Grades (Inflation, Deflation, Neither)

to all you current WashU students. How are the pre-med core courses graded at WashU?Some people told me chem 111a isn't so bad (yeah right,) others told me it's doomsday. How are grades split up for Gen Chem I and II (and Orgo I and II) as well as Bio, Chem Lab, and the other lowerlevel pre-med requirements?

Thanks!

Gen chem is set to a bell curve, based on each exams standard deviations (I think in chem 111 the average was considered a B, while in 112 it was a B-, but it’s all relative to the others in the class)… Similar things for bio. Physics depends on the section- 85 and up is an A (A-) in 117/118 (but there can be a curve, 197 is 90 and up (with the occasional point or two on an exam). Note- 197 has a 35% homework grade and 5% participation, while 117 isn’t quite like that.

As to how you’ll do in the class? You won’t know until the first exam. I owned at chem 111. 112? Not so much. But a lot of people are the exact opposite.

Oh, and for 111 last fall, the average on the exams was ~60.
I swear, I almost up and murdered a kid when I heard him complaining about a 92 on a gen chem exam.

so I’ll help you out with some stats straight from the students. Wash U has course evaluations, and part of each evaluation is the student’s expected grade in the class. It’s not perfect, but it should be a pretty good indication of their actual grade. The stats shown are from all the students that filled out evalutions (i think it’s close to 80 or 90% of the class). I’ll just show you the percentage of A’s and A-'s because those are what you’re gonna need for med school. Oh yeah I’m only including Chemistry because I think that’s what our school considers its weed-out subject. Bio is fine.

Gen Chem 111A - with Mabbs
16.22% A’s
16.60% A-'s
with Buhro:
16.30% A’s
20.06% A-'s

Gen Chem 112A: Section 1
8.55% A’s
13.82% A-'s
section 2:
15.28% A’s
17.61% A-'s

Orgo 251:
25.00% A’s
22.16% A-'s

Orgo 252:
19.44% A’s
20.83% A-'s

Orgo lab 257:
21.83% A’s
31.47% A-'s

interesting

I don’t think those are the gen chem professors for next year…I know Loomis is one, not sure of the other. Look for his stats.

^It’s Mabbs and Loomis next semester. Btw, Loomis is an INCREDIBLE professor. Only reason I never fell asleep in chem 111.

“Thats WUt I said”- thanks for those statistics. Where do you access them? I’m matriculating this fall and am looking for info on the professors. I don’t mean to compare schools, but I remember that Northwestern had a formal, public (for students) system of professor and class ratings, and I haven’t been able to find anything similar at WashU. Something like that would be a big help for scheduling classes. Johnson191- I’ll be sure to keep Loomis on my list of professors to prioritize!

Loomis is by far the best professor I’ve had at Wash U. He’s incredible.

There is one in WashU actually, which is called class evaluations. You can access it from WebSTAC with you student account. Good luck!

What is considered a competitive pre-med GPA at Wash U given grade inflation/deflation? (as in having a shot at Wash U Med school and the like)
