Pre-Med Course Selection

So under a premed track my plan is to try to get all As or the highest GPA under my capability. Therefore I was looking for help from maybe apa current student or a parent who is more than aware of her child's classes. I currently have credit for one semester of english, calc, psychology. I also have credit for chemistry and biology, but I am almost certain that I will not use this as I took chemistry in my junior year and barely remember the info, and seeing that chemistry is a prerequisite for biology, by the time I take biology I probably would of have forgotten the material as well. My question really is how hard the intro to english classes are? I have been reluctant to use my credit seeing that medical schools do not accept AP credit, but would a more in depth English be easier to score an A in than an intro one? Or maybe take a humanities class with English credit Is English considered a weeding out class such as biology or chemistry are. English is definitely my weak point and I really wish to lower my chances of getting my B as much as possible. Also for calculus what is considered the easier class to get an A in, 51 or 21/31. I got a five on the Calculus AB exam so I thought 51 would be better, but is the curve much better in 21 (Assuming the honors class was 31)?

Lastly if I emailed my academic adviser for my schedule could he just give me in advance what my classes are? Is that unheard of I know you get your schedule in orientation, but to get it in advance would help so much

Any help would be appreciated please and thank you

You really do need to make contact with your advisor on this one. I will tell you that my son was advised NOT to waive any courses that were requirements of his major, even with a 5 on the AP exam, but that is BioE and I am not sure that applied in Pre-Med.

English would not be a weed out class in Pre-Med, but you should certianly take advatage of the free tutoring offered in all subject if it is a struggle for you.

Good luck!

I would use your credit on the English class if you can. While they’re not extremely difficult, it’s actually hard to get an A in the english 1/2 classes just because of how the professors grade (I didn’t take either myself but a bunch of my friends actually got their lowest grades in english 1 and 2). As for Calculus, if you don’t want to use your credit I recommend taking Calc 21/22. 51 is definitely the easier option but you shouldn’t have much trouble with 21 since you got a 5 on the AP Exam. The 51 track is really only for people who have to take calculus but have trouble with the subject. You shouldn’t take it only because you want a high GPA (but like I said, with a 5 on the ap exam you should be able to swing an A in 21)

Hey thanks for the help guys I really appreciate it

mumof2boyz I did run this by my advisor as you said and he said my schedule seems fine under the premed track, except a majority of biology majors take Chem 30 instead of Chem 40. Also stated that math 51 is fine.

Also phillipb22 about english class does the english classes get easier the more depth you go into? Are there any english classes out there that would fulfill the premed english requirement that are considered the “easy A” I do plan on getting tutored as much as possible when it comes to my essays would that help greatly in my grade? I got a 4 on the English Lit/Comp exam which only lets me be exempt for one semester, and I need to take two, so is it unwise to just go straight into English 11?

As an additional question anyone know anything about the First Year Seminars. Are these classes considered difficult or are they generally easy? I chose Intelligent Machine: The Computer’s Role in Changing the Way We Work, Live, and Play as my first option, I do not know if this is the one I am enrolled in seeing that people have been placed in their fourth choices for FYS. I chose this mainly because I met the professor during Candidate’s Day and he seemed like a great guy then read about him online and also saw he was an easy grader. So any other opinions on FYS, ones to stay away from and such?

I know that this attitude of Get an A or die trying attitude sets of that vibe and might create some dislike, but I do not know how else to go about this because this really is of the utmost importance to me. Also why I did not send me an email to my advisor asking what are the easiest classes since I do not want to give a certain vibe about me as a person.

Really wish I knew a premed student at Lehigh so I could ask these questions and stop bothering you guys, but unfortunately I do not

Also does anyone know the email or who the premed advisor is at lehigh? My advisor just told me it was Mrs. Raposa but cannot find anything about her.

Can anyone tell me how much harder is Chem 41 than Chem 30? I got a 4 on my AP test in my junior year, is that too low for chem 41 you think who would be filed of chem lovers?

Also if you can help with any of the previous questions that would be greatly appreciated too
