I know that most of the time transfers start anew when it comes to GPA, but will your pre-med prereqs. GPA also begin on a blank slate?

No.

When AMCAS calculates your GPA, every single college level course you ever took at any college at any time, including co-enrollment courses during high school gets counted.

^seconded for emphasis

How does amcas go about a “W” meaning withdrawal from class no credit?

Unless the W is recorded as Withdrawn-failing, it has no effect on GPA.

A Withdrawn-failing counts the same as an F.

Okay. Thank you so much. So even if you have a 2 Ds in 2 courses. When you go to apply and have a gpa of say 3.7 could you write a letter saying why you got those 2?

When you apply you will write a personal statement (PS) that is part of your application. Your PS will explain why you want to go into medicine and the personal journey that brought you to this realization. If you have serious issues with your academics or in your personal background–these issues should be addresses as part of your PS.

You don’t need to speak about the Ds at length, but you do need to make it part of your story.

Okay and how long is this PS normally?

Still possible to get in with 2 Ds? I mean even retaking the class for a better grade but the 2 Ds still being there from the original class.

PS has a hard limit of 5300 characters–including spaces, punctuation and paragraph indents. Anything you write beyond the character limits gets automatically cut off.

Retakes:

For Allopathic schools, both grades will appear on your records sent to med schools and will be included in GPA and sGPA.

For Osteopathic schools, only the newer and [hopefully] better grade will be included in GPA/sGPA calculations. The original grade will be on your transcripts sent to the med schools, but it won’t be included in your GPA calculations.

So assuming I made a 4.0 on a retake in biology - my average for thay class would be 2.5. I understand for a class thats still unaaceptable, but with the PS and retake and ECs could it be oossivle to still get in?

Anything is possible. But you have a long road ahead that requires some significant GPA repair.

Retakes are not averaged together to get one single class grade. (So Bio 1 with grades of D and A /=/ Bio 1 grade of C+.) Retakes are averaged in separately as part of your larger overall GPA/sGPA. IOW, for you, Bio 1 will represent 8 quality points instead of 4.

While you won’t get a clean slate when you begin college again, you do have a second chance. Make the most of it.
