I was admitted to Cal for Spring 2014, but I have chosen to enroll in the FPF program. I am interested in pursuing a pre-med track, and most likely an MCB or IB major. I know that taking chemistry as an FPF student is not possible, and that it is recommended to focus on fulfilling breadth requirements during FPF. However I still am unsure of what classes specifically would be best to sign up for. Any advice on which courses would be the most helpful for a pre-med student to take?

You’re gonna need 2 semesters of math and 2 semesters of English for med school so you should sign up for one of Math 16A/B or Math 1A/B and English R1A/B.

For your other classes just take ones that interest you in order to knock out L&S breadth requirements. Some examples could be ESPM 50AC, Sociology 3AC, or Music 27. I would not take the IB class if it’s still offered because the science classes you’ll be taking later on cover the same breadth.

Don’t worry too much about not taking Chem 1A until the spring semester. Prof. Nitsche usually teaches Chem 1A in the spring and he’s easier than the fall semester professors.

Lastly, if you were wondering about whether med schools care if you’re an IB or MCB major, they don’t! GPA is most important so choose the one that interests you more.

Pre-meds can do any major, as long as they take the pre-med course work as described below (although medical schools do vary slightly; check the MSAR for details on specific medical schools):

Note that MCB and IB require Math 1A-1B or 10A-10B; they do not accept 16A-16B (IB used to accept just 16A).
