Pre-med in Furman?

How's the bio/chem/phy in Furman? Any research opportunities? And how helpful are those professors?

Thanks.

Chemistry is incredible from what I hear and read about Furman. Lots of scholarships are available for chem majors.

Research opportunities at Furman abound. One of my d's closest friends at Furman spent last summer as a sophomore conducting research on an individual project, in part, funded through a Goldwater Fellowship award (this is a very prestigious national scholarship). My d's best friend is on a partial scholarship in physics and a partial scholarship in math, combining funds from these 2 to help pay for school; he has already arranged to remain at Furman next summer to conduct research. Finally, my d's roommate, another sophomore, is "away" this semester on a research biology project in New Mexico. So, lots of research opportunities, many of which are funded independent projects.

While many other schools have more prestigious reputations, these reps are often based on the nature and extent of their research endowments; most of these research funds go to projects at faculty-level and benefit graduate student, or, at best, senior undergrads. Furman has ranked consistently in the top five schools with funding and research opportunities for all of its undergraduate students. For many, this emphasis on UNDERGRAD research opportunities is critical and a very important difference.

As with many small, private LACs, training for pre-professional programs (medical school. law scholl, etc..) is a goal for a large number of students. Furman has an excellent staff to guide pre-med students to their goals and help them get acceptance into excellent med programs.

Hope this answers your concerns. if you have specific questions about pre-med programs, call admissions and have your regional adcom get you a point-of-contact within the pre-med advising program at Furman. Then, you can ask any specific questions or address concerns directly with someone who speaks "pre-med."

I fly jets is correct...I am a Furman grad. Their chem dept is stellar. The school retains students and the faculty heavily invests in training them. My friends from Furman years are published authors, chem professors, social workers, doctors (3 I know), lawyers ( 2 many, ha--like 15 from my class), a Bishop and several ministers, teachers, clinical psychologists, engineers. Furman provides a foundation that is successful for graduate school admissions. I have seen the new Science building plans --incredible when built. No Teaching Assts and full profs in lab sciences in smaller classes.

Thanks a lot.

The Charles Townes Science buikding is almost finished, It will be incredible

We are from the midwest, so Furman isn't "known" around here. In the south, though, people recognize the school are being excellent in the sciences. I have heard particularly good things about chemistry (psych, too). My in laws live a couple hours away from Greenville, and they know a lot of people who would traditionally be considered "successful" & are Furman science grads.
