pre-med paid research for freshmen

My d will be a freshman at PITT this year and wants to do paid research. are there medical-related research opportunities available duringthe freshmen year or do you have to wait until the summer after freshmen year? we are out of state; do you continue living in your dorm during summer? if not, where do you live? What do you typically get paid? And, how many hours do you usually work?

Many departments have research opportunities. My daughter just talked to professors to find work. I think the only dorms open in the summer are the single rooms in Towers C. Food service was not available, so DD just had a fridge and microwave in her room and also ate in restaurants.

The starting pay was close to minimum wage. Pay and hours probably vary from department to department.

When DS got a job as a research asst., he could only stay in the dorms (Tower C) if he was registered for a class. The application should be available on the housing page (there is no rush as rooms were plentiful). This is not an issue anymore since he moved off-campus, he stays in his apt. year-round. I think you can find sublets for the summer since many students go home.

When my DD lived in the Towers for the summer, she was registered for classes. Thanks for pointing that out. I don’t know whether others are allowed. A sublet would probably be less expensive.

Technically yes, but it’s probably harder for a freshman to get research opportunities because they haven’t had any classes yet (i.e. the basic knowledge to understand the research being done). Then again, if your D is coming in with a lot of AP credit, that might be ok.

My guess is around minimum wage upwards, so about $8-10 an hour (I get $10 an hour, but I’m in engineering research, and not many people get paid that much).

Most people in research during the school year probably work 10, maybe 15 hours a week. In the summer I guess you can go up to 40.

My roommate (a pre-med researcher) said that if your D is very interested in research, she should look into the “First Year Experiences” for a research opportunity, as it is unlikely that she would get one on her own without class experience (like I said above).
