I know that if you would like to go to medical school you must volunteer. I was wondering where one should volunteer in Baton Rouge and how are hours recorded? Do you log your own hours and keep them or does the school provide you with a log for hours and you turn them into the school?

As far as hospitals go there’s Our Lady of the Lake and there’s Baton Rouge General. But you can also volunteer at several other places such as the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer center, maybe the Women’s hospital, and any doctor’s offices.

I would think that each place has their own methods and some may not record them at all (i.e. doctor’s offices). There’s no log provided nor do they ever ask for proof of the amount of hours you volunteer (as far as I know, I start using the pre-med committee in May). While saying “I volunteered for over 150 hours” looks great on the application, the point of volunteering is not to rack up hours, but to leave wherever you volunteered with a better understanding of the medical field in general and knowing that a medical career is right for you. The insights you will have gained should be reflected in the Personal statement that you will make.

I’m volunteering at Our Lady of the Lake currently (you can apply to volunteer online or just walk up to Volunteer Services). After volunteering 50 hours, they will print out a letterhead and sign it to confirm you have volunteered a certain number of hours if you need it for some reason. They keep track for you by tallying up your hours that you logged in.
