I am trying to decide which college would give me the best opportunities. I want to major in Chemistry on a pre med track. I know that it doesn’t matter what school you go to to get into med school, but I want a school that would give me the best research and internship opportunities. Currently I live in New York and money is not really a problem
The schools that I am considering are University of Pittsburgh, Stony Brook Univeristy, Binghamton University, Boston University, Northeastern Univeristy, Williams college, University of Massachusetts Amherst and RPI
All of those colleges offer the classes you’ll need to fulfill all the pre-med requirements.
Finding ECs–research, clinical volunteering, community service, shadowing, leadership-- and getting involved with them, that’s all on you. The opportunities will there at all the schools you’ve mentioned.
Generally speaking there is no such thing as pre-med internships. Shadowing is something you have to seek out yourself.
All the colleges you mention offer research opportunities. And even if they don’t, there are numerous summer research programs you can apply for.
(As an aside–of the pre-med ECs I’ve mentioned, research is the on least valued by adcomms. Shadowing, clinical volunteering, community service and leadership are all considered more important than research experience. See the results of survey of med school adcomms on p. 5 [Using MCAT Data in 2018 Medical Student Selection](https://www.aamc.org/download/462316/data/mcatguide.pdf))
One thing you want to look at is how you stand in comparison to the rest of typically admitted freshman class. You want to be in the top 25% of admitted students. Why? Because a lot of weeding goes on in the lower level bio, chem and physics classes, and all those students attending your college…you’ll be competing directly against them for the As you’ll need to have a med school worthy GPA/sGPA.
