Is participating in research as an undergrad or having a job (non-medical) at a hospital more favorable when applying to med school?

both is better. plus community service.

research I would think.

the quality of research would matter, right?

Yes, doing real work (rather than washing glassware) and getting published is AMAZING. It’s fine if you don’t get published, but it validates a lot of your work, especially if you’re a first author.

research is nice, but having clinical/non-clinical medical experience gives you just that: experience.

do both just to make sure.

you gotta do both. research and clinical volunteering (i guess yours would be paid) are two categories out of many that adcoms use for evaluation.
