Predicting the unpredictable COVID-19 - choosing a college based on how this may play out in the Fall

Even in normal times, finding the right college choice is challenging. If I could see the future and know that the school would have all in person classes and full on campus housing Fall 2021, this would be a huge tipping point. But that’s near impossible. Also, with the pandemic uncertainty, I definitely want my son at a school closer than far away if an emergency happens. Preferably not a plane ride away. Is anyone or their student struggling with this?

Yes, right there with you! (also a '21 parent) Wishing there was a crystal ball …

It also seems a waste to pay campus price for online school.

Applied to all in state schools.

We have an older one who goes to school several states away, so it isn’t as big a deal to us if D21 doesn’t stay close. With that said, we did pay attention to how her potential schools dealt with Covid. That motivated her to go towards schools that tested often and were smaller. Even those aren’t perfect, after reading the parent’s FB page, it seems many were still not doing in person classes. It is hard to justify paying OOS for online.

Let’s just put it this way, she has almost all of her decisions including her #1 that gave her merit, and we haven’t put down a deposit! In a normal year, we would not have hesitated.

I can only do my research on what schools are doing now and hope for the best and adopt the mantra to accept that there are things I cannot control. I’m worried about these kids emotionally. My son lost almost his entire half of his junior year (totally virtual) and now so far all of his senior year (a little bit hybrid) and to think of going into yet another academic year as exciting as the first college experience is very sad. But I realize we are all in the same boat.

I admit I am a little worried about how D will adjust to going to classes and keeping up with a workload after so much time at home. She will not go back to school this year. I will be encouraging as easy of a first semester as she can do with her classes!

Yes 100%. I also worry that in April when we have to decide, it will still be very unclear.

It’s made me look harder at schools in warmer locations, since outdoor social activities are safer.

Same boat here! Just wandered over to the CC thread about school in 2020-2021. Recent posts there are making me super nervous. Unbelievable to hear what it’s like for kids quarantining right now in college. Could my D handle it? I don’t know.
