i had a question on the premeds' life at johns hopkins. I know i've heard about the cut throat competitions which are not all true but true to some extent indirectly. But i'm confused on how difficult the classes are. Like the transition from high school courses to college courses. and also the average study time they need? do they not sleep at all?

Introductory classes are not diffult. Generally about 15 hrs of study a on non test weeks (at most). If you took AP classes the transition is easy.

what about on the test weeks?

Test weeks are rough, I'll admit. Even with 6 finals I still found sometime to have some fun. Some days I studied 6hrs straight, some days I studied so long that I ended up staying in the library till the next mourning, and some days I studied 45min (like yesterday!). My pre-med (bio major) friend, has studied a total 10hrs in 2weeks, pfft...non-engineer.

gosh.. i dont know whether i 'll be able to handle that much of work T_T

p.s: frankly my hs' AP classes are not hard at all.. i hardly find myself studying home. .. i know that's bad..

what im hoping to do is pick up on the study-a-little-bit-for-everything-everyday-habit so I dont save all the last minute studying for finals.

if you're going premed, don't you need a year of college chem, bio, etc/. so you're gonna take the introductory courses anyway. what's the point of APs then

for the sake of knowledge, of course! but the majority of AP courses at my school are a joke, so i don't know ow much they will prep me for hard-core college classes, gah.

seriously! unless they allow test retakes at JHU, im screwed!!!!

well jhu will cover your first semester's grade (or first year's i dont remember exactly), and only show whether you passed or now. if you were to fail you can retake it and a transcript shows no indication that you've ever failed in a class.

after that, of course, you're alone, gotta fly :D

Test retakes at JHU would be amazing. I remember Javis last year when we were all applying ED and such, we all thought Hopkins would be great fun and for some of us it has been. Honestly the social aspects here are pretty great. Of course there will be the people that don't leave their rooms on the weekend... and on the other end of the spectrum are the "Hopkins 500" - the same 500 people that attend all the parties/social events. We have club nights and smores in the quad and some of the frat parties really aren't that bad... well actually they can be really good. On the other hand you have the actual work. I came in a bio major with AP credits so I ended up taking physics this semester because its a requirement. Ouch. Physics is pretty painful for most people so I'm happy its covered grades. I got a 57 on my first physics lab. But in the end it really is all a matter of adjustment. I was the kid that never studied but still got As in highschool... now if you don't study you fall far behind and... yea.. studying helps. And there is a lot of studying, which I did not do enough of this semester. I don't think I'm going to fail any classes this semester under the satisfactory/unsatisfactory thing but I am DEFINITELY not getting anything close to As. Covered grades definitely help because you learn a lot about how much work you really need to put in... and then second semester you can adjust accordingly. Honestly if I got to do first semester all over again I think I would slack off just as much though. Its your one chance to have relatively stress free fun exploring campus activities and its kinda good to get your face out of your calc book and have a little fun in college.
