Premed Help!

Hey all,

I am a sophomore liberal arts major who recently decided to go down the premed path. I realize that I have to somehow fit several semesters of bio, chemistry, physics, and calc/statistics into my last two years of school, which I know won't be easy. Knowing this, I have a few questions for you all.

1.) Is it okay to take some of the premed requirements at my 4-year university over the summer? I've heard contrasting arguments for and against this. But, I feel like I'm under time constraints to get the majority done by next spring (the end of my junior year).

2.) Which premed classes should I be taking as soon as possible, and which would be okay to push back to my senior year?

3.) How much does your undergraduate major hurt/help you in admission to medical school? More specifically, will it look "bad" that I'm not majoring in the sciences or mathematics? I'm an international relations major with a 3.94 GPA.

Thank you for your time. I'm just starting to plan everything out and will be meeting with my premed advisor shortly.

1) Some, but not a lot and preferably not both semesters of a given topic.
2) English can be pushed back. Don’t push anything needed for MCAT prep.
3) Not that much, IR is fine. Just do well on the MCAT.

You may want to consider pushing your application back to the summer following graduation. This will give you more time to get your pre-reqs done, study for the MCAT and get your medical ECs done (lab research, physician shadowing, community service, hospital volunteering, developing relationships with your science profs for your LORs.)

The average MS1 is now around 24+ so it’s not like you’ll be older than the rest of your peers…
