Hello, I am a rising second year and I just had a question. Would it look bad to do just the minimum Pre-Med requirements? I already have one year of english, one year of general bio, one year of general chem, one year of physics, and one year of calculus. The only thing i haven't taken is organic chemistry yet. If I just take orgo and not pursue anymore science classes, would that look bad? Thanks.

No, it wouldn't. What's your major?

Double in Finance and Economy. Minor in French.

I think the consensus is that pre-professional majors like nursing or finance don't do well in MD admissions.

Otherwise, I don't see a need of you to take more science courses. You may be asked in interviews to justify your choice of major, though, given the demanding science requirements of medicine.

You probably want another year of biology.

okay thanks bluedevil. would you say human anatomy/phisiology or genetics/functions of cells? or does it not matter? theyre both one year sets.

Either way. Anatomy will help a little in medical school itself.

why would my finance be negative in admissions?

Vocational majors (finance instead of economics, kinesiology instead of biology, marketing instead of psychology) are generally problematic.

The additional science courses that you choose to take depend on where you plan on applying to medical school. A small number of schools have additional science requirements like biochemistry. The AAMC's "Medical School Admission Requirements" book lists schools with additional requirements but referring to the websites of individual schools works the same.

i dont understand when you say vocational majors....

We mean majors that focus on job-specific knowledge rather than on the academic theory that underlies them...

It's not the end of the world, and it's quite possible it won't matter, but it's one of those things where there's no positives that could come out of it, and in a worst case scenario, it would be seen as a negative. I wouldn't get worked up over it though.

What type of freshman year was that? 3 lab science classes + calculus + english? I thought I had it tough when I just had math+chem.

yes venkat, 3 lab science courses+ calc+english and along with communications, basic health science, and others. calc was easy, i already knew everything so it wasnt a big deal.

actually i think im going to stay in my major which is management and i have a minor in management information systems and french. thanks for you help guys. i have decided to take cell functions and genetics which is a set of 2 courses. cheers.

You're aware that those are both vocationals?

my management major? yes i realize but i figure it shouldn't be too much of a trouble as long as my grades are high.
