Premed - University of Rochester Vs Case Western

My S got admitted into both but we are concerned about the GPA inflation/deflation between these two universities. I also wanted to know how aggressive/competitive among students between these two.

Since GPA is one of the vital item for MD admission, where do you think getting GPA within STEM majors is not difficult.

Please share your experience/insights.

Can’t speak to Case Western, but D2 graduated from UR and is now a R2 (second year medical resident).

Based on her experience-- a good deal of pre-med weeding goes on at UR since when she was there ~35-40% of incoming freshmen indicated they were pre-meds. Intro science classes are graded on a curve with the median grade set at C+. Be aware than UR attracts a large number of highly academically prepared students so it can be challenging to stay in the upper half of that curve.

Pre-meds are not cut throat among themselves and the atmosphere is generally cooperative and friendly. Lots of student-organized study groups to work on homework sets and prep for exams. Plentiful opportunities to get involved in research.

D2 didn’t have any problem maintaining her GPA even though she was a double major in math and neuroscience. YMMV.

Annually UR produces about 140 med school applicants/year per AAMC data.

NOTE–that since AMCAS only captures the name of the undergrad, the data does not take into account whether a student has taken coursework elsewhere–like in a career-changer post bacc or graduate degree. Data will include students in BA/MD programs, students who apply directly from undergrad and all alumni applicants.

Thank you so much for sharing the valuable info. Really appreciate your time.

I can safely guess around 100 undergrads are getting into Med school after excluding BS/MD and other candidates. I guess after weed out, there might be at least 500 undergrads with 3.75+ GPA .

I think you’re making some awfully unsubstantiated assumptions.

UR’s Latin honors cutoff might be a better indication of how many students overall earn a GPA in that range.

For students graduating this May, cum laude (top 32% of students) required a 3.7 minimum GPA. In the School of Arts and Science that translates to about 386 students–and that includes ALL majors.
