Prep Roommates at Exeter?

Does any one know if a prep could end up in a single, even if they didn't request it? We incorrectly assumed all incoming preps would have a roommate, but I recently read somewhere (e-Book?) that some preps end up with singles. could any current Exeter students shed some light on the percentage of preps who get singles every year? And if so, which dorms the singles are in? Thanks!!

Yes, a prep can be in a single. However, he or she is more likely to be in a double (or occasional triple). I couldn’t give you a percentage, but I’d guess that a lot more preps will be in doubles than in singles. Returning students pick their rooms for the following year at the end of the previous year, so they usually pick singles for themselves, leaving all the doubles for new students (who are not all preps, of course). But several dorms have almost exclusively singles, so there can be singles left for preps.

Thank you so much for your reply. Which dorms are all exclusively singles? Also, are they male or female dorms? Do all of he leftover singles go to incoming preps who requested singles? Is there a possibility that an incoming prep who did not request a single would end up with one?!! I appreciate any information you can pass along.

Yes there is a chance. Cilley (male) and Amen (female) are both all singles. There are probably other dorms like that but those are the only ones i know about.

There are 29 dorms at Exeter, and each has a different balance between singles and doubles. Some dorms don’t have all singles but only have a handful of doubles, so preps can end up in a single in those dorms as well. I don’t know whether preps who didn’t request a single may end up in one (the Dean of Students handles dorm and room assignments). At any rate, dorm assignments for this coming year should be announced fairly soon…

Thank you for your information, it was very helpful. And good luck to you, istoleyournose, I hope you have a terrific prep year!

Thanks very much! Hope your S/D enjoys it as much as I know I will.

I have a friend whose daughter did not request a single and she ended up with one as an entering prep a couple yrs ago.

Most of the rooms in Wentworth are singles. It is a boys dorm.

I hope S gets Wentworth- he toured it on the revisit day with his guide (I wonder if it was your son Liddyb4?) He said the rooms looked pretty nice…

I read an article in the exonian saying that since they took in like 20 new students (for more tuition) they are having to convert singles into doubles… probably making it even harder for preps to get singles.

istoleyournose, was this a recent copy of the Exonian? Did you have a subscription or did you pick one up on campus during EE? Also, do any of you Exeter parents know if we can subscribe to the Exonian?

Parents can definitely subscribe to the Exonian! I think they send you a form … it should arrive soon. (please correct me if I’m wrong, current exonians or parents)

thanks, tuesdayair, do you have a current student at Exeter? How did they fare with the dorm/roommate situation?!

It was a very recent issue I think the last one published and a friend of my dad’s has a subscription and he gives them to my dad when he’s done.

I’m actually not a parent but a recent graduate of Exeter (sorry about the confusion). I was lucky enough to have single rooms all of my four years at Exeter. I think that it would be nice to have a roommate in the beginning of the year, but as the school year progresses it becomes much easier to live in a single (because of strange sleeping schedules or other habits, perhaps). I know roommates who become best friends, but also roommates who have to draw a line in their room. I also have friends who switched roommates. In the end, I don’t think that rooming situations are big concerns for most Exonians - we have so many other things to worry about! (essays, tests, high school drama, etc)

It is possible for a prep to get a single at Exeter. There are dorms like Amen that have all singles. I’m sorry if someone has said this already. I’m just too lazy to read it xP haha
