Prep Schools In The News & Media

This is also true of Kiddo1’s boarding school.

It sounds like you have a great public school option.

I can only speak from my own experience, which is not extreme privilege, and based on one kid, one public school and one boarding school.

Kiddo’s bs friend group is from a multitude of cultural, racial, geographic and economic backgrounds. I have been impressed with their ability to have big, hard, constructive conversations about the forces that want to pull them apart, and the assumptions and biases they each walk around with. They check each other, but constructively. They are kind and thoughtful and generous with each other. Honestly, I have learned a lot from kiddo bringing home what he has learned from his friends. It is humbling at times (eg when he checks me, especially when he is right!). They are very well-read, and have very different life experiences (eg the kid from China whose father protested at Tienamen Square and is anti-vax based on his father’s experience with oppressive governments, the full-ride, brilliant kids of color who have dealt with racism and been underestimated all their lives, the daughter of farm workers, the first gen girl from India whose parents are doctors, the day students who are amazingly talented athletes, the wealthy kids from Korea who are mind-blowingly talented musicians, and my very “normal” white boy from a suburb of San Francisco). On the one hand, that diversity of thought and experience is an amazing opportunity. On the other, of course that amount of diversity creates challenges- from what food to offer in the dining hall, to what kind of counselors and tutors the school needs. And how discipline is meted out. And what books should be read in history class.

There are sjw types everywhere- as you point out. But I don’t think they are uniquely a product of the privileged (although there seems to be a special brand of sjw like you describe). It is part of the times we live in. I expect some schools have more of a sjw culture, for better or worse- it is something to pay attention to for the schools your child applies to, if it is a concern of yours.

Eta: they also have a very eclectic taste in music that they share

More current news adventures with $60,000 a year NYC independent day schools. Wow…makes a strong case for parents to consider boarding schools that are well managed.

Are all the top boarding schools NAIS?

…many boarding schools already cost more than that. Lawrenceville day student tuition is currently $60,250, and it’s north of 70k for boarders.

…I mean, I wouldn’t be surprised if such incidents happen. It’s a valid concern. Are any of these schools intentionally not going mask-optional because of this? Doesn’t look like it.

delete this post please as it was useless complaining about the post and i got in trouble recently (not w/ skieurope)

I think this is happening at BS too. Parents just know less and the kids push back more because they’re more diverse.

Here is the recent Bloomberg news article about NYC 2022-23 private school tuitions . In most cases these tuition levels start at Kindergarten . The parents better hope the bonus pools, private equity carried interests or trust funds hold out . Can you imagine being a teacher living in NYC ? Don’t see how they make it.

More news and an update from California…

This is a very disturbing report.

A family friend of mine is a Spence teacher, and she commutes from Westchester each day. I doubt most of those people actually live in NYC.

Interesting article for those familiar with Lowell… I know, not technically a private school…

Interesting, but unnecessarily lengthy, article. New Yorker writers, I suspect, are paid by the word.

A notable and sad case study of a leading day school …maybe the start of a turn ?

“Sad”? "Woke? “maybe the start of a turn”? Not sure what all this means and how it is relevant to prep school admissions, with emphasis on the word admissions.

I would add that an opinion piece from the NY Post is probably not the most persuasive source around.
