Prep Schools In The News & Media

I know nothing about nothing, and had never heard of the Presidential Scholars thing until like 6 months ago. My guess is that this program has political influences, and as a result (1) public schools have favored status by the local administrative folks who submit names, and (2) some schools participate more enthusiastically than others and more kids apply from those schools. I wouldn’t read the list to be the elite of the elite students, so much as a list of students who did really well on the SATs and applied for it. Why others didn’t apply? Lots of reasons.

There are lots of programs that are “unfair” to big population states, National Merit being one of them. We Californians are used to it. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

There is a news story this weekend in the New York Post about a certain Health class at Columbia Prep. I won’t post link because of the content.

This story is interesting also because it raises questions about how much sex education and what type of sex education should be provided by schools. Also, should parents be informed about content? Do parents have a right to know about course content?

Favorite quote:

“We were all like, ‘What?’” a female student said. “Everyone was texting each other, ‘What the hell is this? It’s so stupid.’ Everyone knows about p***. The worst part of it was that it took place not long before the AP tests and I had to miss both my AP classes for this.

We know a student there who shared a similar sentiment with us @ thinking this was a waste of time especially while time was precious for studying upcoming AP tests.

Very sad case…but Penn Supreme Court rules on Blair Academy. Some of you may know the story @ wrongful death case of student participating in a ski club or ski team activity a few years ago. This ruling now is about arbitration.

We kind of figured this was going to happen after Fall 2020’s record.

Just 2020? We lost 50-0 to Deerfield back in 2019… at a home game.

Hey Kids! Dalton is in the news…too sensitive to post.

“would not have seen it, if I didn’t believe it”

Here is my thought on the subject of teaching certain topics at school: If you can’t post it on The Prep School CC forum, then it should not be taught at school.

The parents who were quoted in 2 articles expressed not only concern about content being age appropriate for 5-7 year olds, but also they expressed concern about not being informed about this curriculum BEFORE it was presented.

That whole situation is wild. Similar thing happened at Columbia Prep earlier this month.

Given that these events have, AFAIK, only been reported by the NY Post, Fox News, and similar, one wonders about the veracity of these stories, or at least if there is more to the story.

A mom I know sent me a link to the video that was shown to the kids. You can find one link via the Daily Mail.

Check out the parent quotes in the article…

@SkiEurope - please understand your elders. FYI, those of us of a certain age rely on The Post for our sense of humor in these trying times. Many of us remember life before the internet or cable TV when The Post was the first NYC news you would get while riding the subway on your way to work each morning.

I have been known to skim the Post, particularly Page Six. But I also know that the Post, like others within that empire, presents its stories with a certain slant. And to be fair, the other NY tabloid, as well as the major broadsheet, are often correctly accused of having their own bias. I would be more inclined to dive deeper, although for various reasons I do not peruse readers’ comments, had the story also been reported by one if the other major NY news sources. All I am saying is consider the source.

Yes. It was that  :face_vomiting: bad.

The same consultant was responsible for the content for both events.

Parents at several NYC Prep schools are forming groups to address concerns about curricula

In case you are a fan of Gilmore Girls…ever wonder which prep schools inspired the name of Chilton and the school uniform? Probably not, but here is an article on it.

I actually knew someone that taught at this school a few years ago,.and left quickly. Some of you might recognize the sign as you drive through Great Barrington on your way to Berkshire or Hotchkiss.

Weird.

It would make more sense to just enroll their kids elsewhere.

Playing in the MAPL (Mid Atlantic Prep League) put L’ville football at a disadvantage when it played the bigger New England schools.

As of a few years ago, MAPL schools were limited to 4 PGs while some New England schools allowed up to 8 PGs.

Sad to hear Cushing Academy recently decided to end football.

L’ville might want to interview The Hun School’s head football Coach. He does an excellent job on the field and gets his players into top notch schools.
