Prepping Questions

I couldn't find a place for PSAT prepping, so here i am! So, i'm a freshman and i'm preparing for the PSAT i will take my sophomore year. I know that it does not count towards anything, but i wish to be able to get as close to perfect as possible so that studying for my junior year and the SAT will be a lot easier. Thanks in advance :)

actually, i believe the soph PSAT counts
if you’re planning to apply to summer programs/interns as a rising junior, then they will look at your soph PSAT score
but i suggest that as a freshman, you should not waste money now for prep programs, but start with getting books and taking practice tests, once a week, maybe?
since you dont have to write an essay for the PSAT, spend your time studying basic grammar rules.
for CR, i suggest start learning vocabs NOW xD if i could go back in time to my freshman year, thats what i would do =)
for math, i actually used the Art of Problem Solving, not for SAT tho. for the AMC (if you’ve heard of it)
trust me, after AMC math, SAT math looks like pre-k stuff =)
and overall, ill say it again. relax, you got lots of time, take as many practice tests as you can. believe it or not, they actually help =D i raise my score by about 30-70 pts with each practice test i take

haha i already get 80s on the math parts and i got an 800 on a college board math part its my writing and CR tht lack :frowning: do u have any specific tips for those?

Like they all say, read books. You still have 2 full years before SAT stuff rolls in so read while you have time.

I haven’t read a book for leisure in 4 years. It affects CR score. Trust me.

I honestly don’t have time to read except over summer so would that be good enough if i did say, a book a week? cuz i also need to maintain my grades. Also, how should i improve my writing other than just repeatedly going through the grammer rules

practice those grammar rules on a few practice psats. You can probably find a full psat practice test in your guidance office at your school.

You have too much time before sophomore PSATs. If you start extensively studying now, you’ll have no resources for studying later. Start in the summer and go through some books other than Collegeboard, because the tests made by CB are valuable; save them for junior year. I would suggest PR’s 11 Practice Tests. Practice extensively in the summer - just do a section each day and come back to us and ask for explanations of whatever you need.

i dont know…for me, books don’t really help much
i took advice and started reading newspapers, TIME, and etc, but it didn’t help me at all for the passages
what helps me is just concentrating on the information of the passages, i mean, actually enjoying them. but then again, we’re all different =)

thanks for the great advice guys! and specifically:

@RAlec114: haha i dont think i will extensively study, i think section + review each weekend and then extensive studying over the summer. just as a note, i have 3 practice psats and 32 full length practice SATs at my disposal so i have a lot to work with. Regardless, i dont want to do much, considering that i need to keep up my grades.

@Selena731: I kno what u mean! i find; however, that im more of a bookish type compared to my friends and studying till i kno it cold is what i do best  as long as its not too boring!

and oh yeah, whats the AMC?

Where’d you get the 32 full length SATs?

AMC is a math competition. Ask your math teacher if your school hosts it. If you do well enough, you can advance to the next level and eventaully the USAMO. It’s great for college admissions.

i have 10 SATs from a specific collegeboard book, 10 SATs from the bb, 10 from the pr, and 1 from Barrons…uhh well 31 full length; I also have 3 practice PSATs all from Princeton Review

whoa thats alot O_o
and yeah, more like BEG your math teacher to host it, if he/she hasnt yet =D its really fun and like RAlec114 said, it looks VERY good on your college admissions
but good luck with the studying for the SATs =D

thanks  and haha oh i will beg him to! and lol im quite a bit of an overachiever so PSATs and SATs, here i come! altho im horrible with cr and w

What’s that “specific” CB book?
