Preps?

UVa doesn't have a lot of prep school grads. Students are mostly public school grads. So we do not have a lot of preps at all.

Help me understand this:
Your father probably wears a polo shirt or a button down shirt tucked into a pair of khakis on weekends. Would you call your father "preppy"? No. Your father is normal. Then why is such outfits characterized as "preppy" when a college male sports it? Why isnt this characterized as "mature-looking" instead?

I lived in Brown College my first year. Man, to this date, I still slap myself for making such a terrible decision. I enjoyed it, but that first year experience is forever lost. Old dorms or New dorms would have been much better IMO.

This is my second year living in Brown. Man, this place is getting weird.

what exactly do you miss when you don't go to old or new dorms for your first year? Is it that much different?

It is completely different. Seriously. Brown as a 1st year is for certain people, not all people though. Like I said you need to know what you're trading if you decide to live in Brown 1st year and not in 1st yr housing.

what exactly is it that I would be giving up?

dramageek164: actually attire can tell you quite a bit about someone. contrary to what we want to think... we love to judge people, and sometimes these judgements are ture. i never said that a black friend agreeing with me had anything to do with the credibility of the statement. it merely says that most black people think of preppy people as white (doesn't mean their aren't black or asian or other race preps). i have explained my definition of preppy in this thread already, so maybe if you could actually read (it seems like you can't from your comments) you would go back and read the previous posts so you wouldn't just be another useless post.

ALL I WANTED TO KNOW IS IF THE MAJORITY OF THE STUDENTS ARE COLLARED SHIRTWEARING, KHAKI PANTS, SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN, DEBUTANTE WOMEN!!! my impression is that no, they aren't. i hope for UVA's sake that dramageek didn't get in

Everyone else on this thread has been really helpful. Also i found out that UVA has the #2 undergrad B-school (although those rankings are always pretty outofwhack). Now if they get a good football team, i'm on board......

"ALL I WANTED TO KNOW IS IF THE MAJORITY OF THE STUDENTS ARE COLLARED SHIRTWEARING, KHAKI PANTS, SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN, DEBUTANTE WOMEN!!! "

a large portion of the student body, but not a majority, do this. but just as many people wear jeans + tshirt if not more. its a state school you get all kinds of crazy fashion stuff but yes if in old dorms the majority of ppl wear that stuff (which is why you avoid walking over there in sundress season as much as possible). not in the other living quarters (except maybe a sorority/frat?).

MattEisn,
From your postings here, there is a tone that projects a moral superiority to the "preps" you view with disdain. UVA is a conservative school with a strong "preppy" element, but it is also a state school and a relatively large school with over 13,000 undergraduates. My understanding is that "preps" are certainly part of the scene (and welcomed and even accepted as ok!!), but they definitely do not dominate the campus. Students of all types can find their place at the school. From my experience with students and alums, UVA is a pretty accepting and gracious place and so are the vast majority of its students, including the "preps." If you want to go to UVA, then go, but leave your moralizing views about preps at home.

As for your indication that you are "on board," I was surprised to read this, given your statement yesterday on another thread that Michigan is your first choice.

MattEisn:
"i never said that a black friend agreeing with me had anything to do with the credibility of the statement. it merely says that most black people think of preppy people as white"

The opinion of your one black friend doesn't mean that "most black people" think anything. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt and hoping that you had a more sophisticated definition of preppy, something that related less to "preppy people's" clothes and more to how "preppy people" treat others.

I haven't read most of the posts on this thread, so you're going to get my initial reaction, which is likely my best one:

The University has a lot to offer to a wide variety of people. Yes, there are more "preppy" people here than the average college, but there are just as many anti-preps (for lack of better term). It's not even a real big popularity thing...if you're a likeable person, people will like you. We do have a huge Greek system though...some frats are...fratty....others aren't.....I actually recommend rush for every first year male, whether you're interested in frats or not, because 1. It's a good way to meet loads of people....it's extremely diverse 2. It's college...you can only do it once, so might as well live in the moment 3. it's a REALLY good time.

Charlottesville is also really nice...I don't know if this factors much in to the overall choice, but the weather here is nice most of the time...occasionally we'll have like one day of really crazy weather, but the overall climate is pretty mild....we were in the 60s a couple of times in December/January and its sunny most of the time...always a plus, at least in my book.

Food around the area is fabulous...On-Grounds food could use a little work, but just around C-ville and on the Corner, it's great.

over 30 per cent minority....yet again...extremely diverse

Professors are great...I love most of my classes (yeah the works annoying some times, but there are very few if any classes where I feel I've gained nothing).

Grounds is unbeatable...the Lawn is gorgeous, as is the general infrastructure...very classy. I love how aesthetically pleasing it is to just walk around.

You're a guy I'm assuming....lots of cute girls...they're smart and dress well too...

The Honor Code is pretty big here...you can leave your stuff laying around in the library without worrying about it getting stolen and such. Love it.

John Paul Jones Arena: Basketball games are ridiculous and you will DEFINITELY have the opportunity to see many big names perform...DMB performed here with Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Billy Joel, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Cirque du Soleil, Justin Timberlake is coming this month (not much of a fan, but eh...he has a large fan base I guess), Common....there's also Starr Hill, the local brewers who also have a lounge...many top performances...Flaming Lips, Method Man, Robert Randolph yet again (only this time just him and the Family Band). There are a couple of nice art displays around Grounds or in C-ville every now and again.

The bars are always tight...Weekend starts on Thursdays :)...parties are fun too

Tradition and student activities are also a plus...the University has been in operation since 1825, so there is ALOT of tradition/history, which is great to be a part of. We're also huge on student governance, so if you're in to that, there are many ways for you to get involved. There's also U-guides, Mock Trial, LOADS of clubs (many span multiple universities, and most universities will have lots of clubs, but are distinct in our proportionality).

Last but not least...we're one of the best schools in the world, and many of the country's current and future leaders have come out of/are going to graduate from the University...your membership as a student does warrant you a degree of prestige not afforded to you by many other schools. We have class, intelligence, work-ethic, and ambition, but we're not dead stiffs and know how to have a good time. Throughout my college career, I've met two people who came to UVa and didn't like their experience, and it was because they failed out.
