Prestige by region

My reason for posting is that I am interested in regional differences associated with prestige. I am from Boston, and if asked to provide a list of eminent U.S. institutions, it would include: Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Caltech, Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, Brown, Cornell, Upenn, Amherst, Williams, (the milieu of elite n.e. lac’s), Duke, Cooper Union, U. Chicago, Georgetown, Northwestern, U Michigan, UVA, William and Mary, and UCBerkley. [The list is in arbitrary order.]

Absent from my list are Princeton, Oberlin, Reed, Rice, Emory, Notre Dame, Grinnell, and Vanderbilt. I am not saying that these schools are not prestigious, but rather, that they did not come to my mind when I went to write my list. Of course, I know that Princeton is considered by most to be one of the best schools in the country (if not the best), but it’s the school I am most likely to forget when trying to name the ivies.

I’d be obliged if you could tell me where your from, and what schools you think are the most prominent. It could be interesting to see the regional variation. So, what does your list look like?

I am from Houston.

When I ponder prominent institutions, Rice, Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth, and Georgetown come to mind. If this list can be extended to schools outside the United States, then I would also include Oxford and Cambridge.

Hmm..this is a fun game.. :) Ok, I'm bored and studying so I welcome all distractions..

I'm in Baltimore..When I think Prestige I associate it with the following, in no particular order..

Duke, Vandy, Princeton, Columbia, Harvard, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown and Rice.

What can I say, I'm random!

I think while region may be a big factor, it always has a lot do with ethnicity. For example from my experiences, asians tend to think highly of science schools such as MIT Stanford while somewhat neglecting schools such as Yale and many LACs.

I'm from New England, and my list would probably consist Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT, Cornell, JHU and Columbia.

im also from near boston, and when i think of prestige, i think harvard, yale, mit, stanford, bc, brown, and amherst :}

BC? I guess BC is pretty prestigious nowadays, but I just think it is ridiculous. BC alumni connections and Division 1 football have catapulted them into the spot light. Thirty-years ago, BC was a small commuter school with very few admissions criteria. It all started with a "Hail-Mary" pass by Doug Flutie. Heh, sorry for the rant, I just think BC is the most overrated school in the country.

Haha..my boyfriend went to BC..his brother actually plays football for them right now. I actually think it's a quality school, with an education to match. My younger cousin applied this year, with excellent stats, and was rejected. This leads me to believe they're becoming more and more selective as time goes on..

I certainly agree, they are more and more selective each year. I am just saying that they have a prestige which greatly outweighs their merits or accomplishments as a school. What great breakthroughs do you hear of being made at BC? How often do you see experts in thier fields from BC? They have a couple high and mighty theologians, such as Peter Kreeft, but that's about it. In short, you need to be connected to get into the school. I know a number of complete idiots who go there, and a number of Ivy leaguers who have been rejected. My aunt does alumni interviews for them, and she has found that they tend to take the least qualified students, as well as those she recommends the least. My argument was that the school made its way into the public conscience not through academic excellence, but rather through a patent attempt to become the Notre Dame of the east coast - and it worked.

Heh, sorry. I didn't mean for this to be BC bashing. But yeah, any other input would be appreciated and NOT criticzed =).

no, i totally agree with you, but apparently bc has turned into a rather prestigious institution over the years. i have a few friends who go there and the work load is crazy they all say. the only problem i have with it is the outrageous price and how much alumni relations are a factor in admission.

Princeton simply "didn't come to mind" when you were thinking about prestigue?
