1) how hard is it to get into Smith College?
2) how hard is it to get into SUNY bing? (I know for this school the SAT range is pretty wide.. how would a 2000 be for this school? but low GPA?)
3) is Boston college or Boston University more prestigious?
4) what kind of people are at boston U & boston C?
5) what kind of SAT score/GPA does one need for BU / BC?
6) how does Northeastern University compare to Smith, Bing, BU, BC?

arrange in admission difficulty (general):
Smith College
SUNY Bing
Boston University
Boston College
Barnard College
NYU
Northeastern University

You'll get lots of "answers" here from people speculating on what grades and test scores will get you into the schools on your list. Rather than rely on speculation, I'd suggest you get facts.

Start by going to the admissions page of each school on your list. Search for "freshman profile" and you'll see how many applications they received last year, and what the "typical" enrolled freshman looked like this year.

Then, get hold of a good guide book (the Fiske Guide, Princeton Review) or pay $15 to access the US News & World Reports Premium College search site (www.usnews.com). All three will give you the actual facts and figures about admit rates for regular decision, early decision, median test scores, GPAs, financial aid availability, etc. (I personally think the 15 bucks for the premium online edition of the US News Best College information is worth every penny because it breaks down admissions information in great detail for each school).

All of the information you need is readily available, but get the facts from reliable sources. Unfortunately, here on CC you'll just get mainly speculation, not facts. CC is useful for filling in the picture of what individual schools are like and rumors about what specific schools might prefer beyond grades/test scores --- but you need the facts first in order to make an informed decision about whether a particular school is a fit for your particular stats. Best of luck.

By the way, simply in terms of raw overall admissions numbers, here are the facts about the way the schools on your list line up:

Barnard - 27% accepted
Boston College - 32% accepted
NYU (Note: this is for the University overall, certain majors have lower admit rates): 35% accepted
Northeastern University -42% accepted
SUNY Bing - 44% accepted
Boston University - 55% accepted
Smith College - 57% accepted

I actually know all the "information" already , of course
I wanted to see what different people thought about the schools.

I definately do not regard Princeton review as a reliable or good source, neither US news. I visited all the homepages of the aforementioned unis/colleges.

CC is more helpful than sites such as Princeton review because the people here are realistic. Many sources give too optimistic admission outlooks on colleges.

those acceptance percentages are misleading, I think. By the looks of it Smith would be less selective than SUNY Binghamton, but the applicant pool is entirely different. Do people take that into account when they look at those percentages, Carolyn?

I find that many people on this site are uninformed, and one gets far better info about chances by simply reviewing colleges' web sites as well as information in guides like US News'.

The info that I find helpful about colleges is individual student's experiences, financial aid packages, stats, or info about their perspective on what a college offers.

Many people here, though, when estimating chances are simply making wild guesses. Prestige also varies based on where one lives. What a New Englander disdains may be highly regarded in another part of the country.

Boston University is in the city. Boston College is outside the city. Boston College is a Catholic school. You will encounter more students from private high schools than at BU. I would call BC preppier, more enclosed, more nurturing. It is hard to get any attention from professors at BU. You have to be independent. BC has a lot of social prestige lately. However, you need high scores to get into BU, and it is a very expensive school.

Dke, Yes, you're absolutely right. The admissions figures ARE deceptive and are driven quite a bit by how "popular" any particular school is at any particular time with hordes of 17-year old high school students. But, then, so is the "prestige" of any particular university or college.

I've often wondered what would happen if colleges, guidebooks and people here on CC stopped talking about "admit rates" and started talking about "reject rates." For instance, Harvard has a 92% reject rate, Barnard has a 73 reject rate, etc. I think people get too caught up in admit rates sometimes and fail to really see what their chances of getting rejected are. :)
