Prestige of undergrad affect admission?

<p>I attend a 4th tier school for financial reasons and also proximity. Does the rank of your school affect your chances at top mmba programs? What if you had a high gmat?</p>

<p>No, get a high GPA and GMAT. MBA adcoms are not prestige hogs like many of the posters in CC. Also, top MBA programs require at least 2 years post undergrad work experience. Get a good first job and excel.</p>

<p>This is probably one of the least weighed factors, go to HBS or any other top business school they list students’ undergrad institutions. They come from almost every school.</p>

<p>I hate to be the pessimist, but I think it matters quite a bit although indirectly. </p>

<p>Top MBA classes are generally 1/3 mgmt consulting, 1/3 banking, 1/3 other. but mgmt consulting and banking jobs are generally only obtained by students from top undergrad institutions. thus, roughly 2/3 of the spots are going to be for primarily top u-grad people. </p>

<p>so while they may not say “oh this person went to harvard undergrad, lets give a boost”, that student will have a better shot at premium jobs, and that premium employment will lead to much better chances.</p>

<p>hahaha’s post is correct, but the “as long as you can get a top job” qualifier is huge. at many lower ranked schools it will be extremely tough to break into those fields.</p>

<p>tomo, sure - every type of undergraduate school is represented in those 3 HBS classes, however, one must look at what percent of undergraduates from these schools are at HBS.</p>

<p>I don’t think anyone is being a prestige whore in here. It is just a simple fact. People from more prestigious schools have a better chance of getting a more prestigious job (and the better the job, the better your chances are to get into a top MBA program). Obviously many people break this trend, and going to a prestigious school is by no means the only way to get into a top job. It can just make it easier as you will have to do more to distinguish yourself at a less recognized school.</p>
