I attend a 4th tier school for financial reasons and also proximity. Does the rank of your school affect your chances at top mmba programs? What if you had a high gmat?

No, get a high GPA and GMAT. MBA adcoms are not prestige hogs like many of the posters in CC. Also, top MBA programs require at least 2 years post undergrad work experience. Get a good first job and excel.

As long as you can land a top job, the rank of your school wont matter.

thanks guys. or girls…

This is probably one of the least weighed factors, go to HBS or any other top business school they list students’ undergrad institutions. They come from almost every school.

I hate to be the pessimist, but I think it matters quite a bit although indirectly.

Top MBA classes are generally 1/3 mgmt consulting, 1/3 banking, 1/3 other. but mgmt consulting and banking jobs are generally only obtained by students from top undergrad institutions. thus, roughly 2/3 of the spots are going to be for primarily top u-grad people.

so while they may not say “oh this person went to harvard undergrad, lets give a boost”, that student will have a better shot at premium jobs, and that premium employment will lead to much better chances.

hahaha’s post is correct, but the “as long as you can get a top job” qualifier is huge. at many lower ranked schools it will be extremely tough to break into those fields.

^ BostonEng speaks the truth. Prestige of undergrad definitely affects BSchool admissions, just indirectly.

correct. didnt feel like typing all that out haha

I see that some CC prestige slaves have chimed in.

Here is the list of undergraduate schools attended by Harvard MBA’s:
[Undergraduate Institutions - MBA - Harvard Business School](Undergraduate Institutions - MBA - Harvard Business School)
Every type of school is represented from elite to Podunk.

Interesting how Harvard seems to be the barometer. On another note, what would be the top 3 jobs for a graduate in yall’s opinion??

banking at BB’s and consulting at MBB

tomo, sure - every type of undergraduate school is represented in those 3 HBS classes, however, one must look at what percent of undergraduates from these schools are at HBS.

I don’t think anyone is being a prestige whore in here. It is just a simple fact. People from more prestigious schools have a better chance of getting a more prestigious job (and the better the job, the better your chances are to get into a top MBA program). Obviously many people break this trend, and going to a prestigious school is by no means the only way to get into a top job. It can just make it easier as you will have to do more to distinguish yourself at a less recognized school.
