Pretigious Schools?

I'm going to skip all of the introductions and just get to it:

I want to play college football and I want to work in football after I leave school, beginning in coaching/scouting, and if that doesnt go anywhere I would want to work in the business side with the aim of being an Athletic Director.

A lot of jobs I have seen say that they prefer business majors, particularly sports management.

My question is, would it be better to go to an internationally presitious school such as Harvard which doesn't have a business degree opportunity, which would be my ideal major, but it is Harvard. Or should I go to a prestigious school that offers business undergraduate degrees? Which of these schools would be worth going to over Harvard, if you can also take into account what job I could get from these colleges if my football career doesnt work out (only as a last resort, so don't look at this too much), as well as the prestige of it's business school, in particular sports management if it offers this, and the level of its football team.

Thanks so much in advance!

IMO you’d be better off at a large U. That seems to be where grads come from for the NFL.

You’re an int’l who’s a sophomore. You say that you’re being recruited to play football in the US? By which schools and for what position?

Do you know that Harvard and the other ivies do not give athletic scholarships?

What level of football is recruiting you?

Umich would be the best choice in this circumstance in my opinion.

Yeah,I’m a 6’3 230lb TE/DE/LB and I’ve got a few schools looking at me right now including UPenn, Prinecton, Penn State and Tulane, all of which I’m going to be visiting in the summer for camps etc. as well some other schools like UVa.

If I understand your question correctly, your’e simply asking if there’s any school (a business school in particular) that offers equally great career prospects after college, is that correct? If that’s what you were trying to ask, then my answer to that is, yes. Wharton, the business school of UPenn is highly regarded and is a great place for establishing connections in the business community. MIT-Sloan is close behind. Michigan-Ross, Berkeley-Haas, NYU-Stern and Virginia-McIntire would also be great as well, though they’re generally considered in a league below Harvard. (It’s like Oxbridge = Harvard, Wharton > LSE = Michigan-Ross, Berkeley-Haas, NYU-Stern or UVa-McIntire.

If you’re asking if going to Harvard would be more beneficial for you in the long run than going to earn an undergrad business degree from a top-rated b-school like, NYU-Stern, for instance, then I’d say, yes. The Harvard name is the most prestigious name in whole academia, and it enjoys special preferential treatments from top employers in the US and across the world. There are Harvard grads in almost all countries around the world and many of them occupy high seats in government and business, so I think it’s hard to beat the Harvard brand name.

If you’re asking if there are other schools in the US that are as prestigious as Harvard that could offer almost similar opportunities to their graduates, then the answer to that is, yes. A degree from Stanford, Yale, Princeton, Caltech and Wharton are just as prestigious as a degree from Harvard. (Again, please notice that of the 7 mentioned schools, only Wharton is a business school).

And, lastly, if you’re asking if a degree from HYPSM will land you a job in WS as an investment banker or management consultant, then the answer to that is, yes, in spite of their absence of a business school.

In short, Harvard (any degree) = Stanford, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Caltech, Wharton > Berkeley-Haas, Michigan-Ross, Stern, McIntire = Duke, Northwestern, etc…

^ The OP wants to work in the NFL with the general aim of being an athletic director, not general business. Totally different.

There are a bunch of Ivy guys in the NFL (Jason Garrett, Formerly Bill O’Brien)

What is more important to you, playing college football or where you get your degree? If you aren’t being recruited by Harvard your odds of getting in are very low. If you want to play football your best chances are at schools that want you to play football for them. As for the prestige aspect, I suggest reviewing the alma maters of current GMs and athletic directors. I suspect you’ll find that they come from many different schools.

The best school to get a job in sports management is the one that gives you access to the athletic department for internships. I’ve heard that Michigan and Notre Dame are very good for that, but given that you aren’t being recruited by them are they worth considering? Conversely, given the level of interest that sports are shown at the Ivies compared to major conferences, I can see the NFL and many universities viewing a Harvard education as a hinderance when it comes to their athletic department.
