Prevalence of Fraternities/Sororities?

I visited the UIUC campus during early September and I loved everything about it: the engineering program, the breadth, the energy of the campus... I'm just wary about one thing. I'm slightly more on the introverted side, and I am not planning on joining a frat. How prevalent is greek life on the campus? I understand that people will have greek friends and non-greek friends alike (what everybody says), but if you don't want to be a part of the "wild frat parties," does it affect you?

my friend there has never been to a frat part nor have many of his friends. So it seems pretty easy for him to avoid it. That said it might affect you some other way that I couldn’t predict (best friend joins a frat, frat guy pukes on your shoe when walking down Green Street early Saturday morning, you have a crush on a sorority girl, whatever).

Is there really that much of a social division though between people involved with greek life and everyone else?

I go to u of i and am in a fraternity. College is not as superficial as high school. I have non-fraternity friends, friends that don’t drink or party, friends that are somewhat introverted. Its all about the decisions you make and what YOU want to do in college. U of I has a huge campus with a diversified student body. With that being said, I would say the majority of people do go out on the weekends, but that’s the case at any public uni.
