Princeton has decided to no longer require applicants to take the essay portion of the SAT or ACT exam for admission. Instead it will require applicants to submit a graded writing assignment from either an English or History class. Probably a much better way to assess writing competency of applicants, but far more time consuming for admissions officers.
Excellent. Hope more schools follow.
Waiting for UC schools, Stanford, Brown and others to join the HYP bandwagon…
Where did you see this announced?
@JaneyM Source? According to Princeton’s website, they still require the SAT or ACT with Essay. https://admission.princeton.edu/how-apply/standardized-testing
The new policy was announced at the information session I attended while visiting this week. The admissions officer said that it had just been decided and the website had not yet been updated.
Here it is officially reported by the Washington Post. Stanford is also dropping the SAT/ACT essay requirement (although they are still encouraging students to send an essay score). https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2018/07/05/princeton-drops-requirement-that-prospective-students-take-sat-or-act-essay-test/?utm_term=.fe1bb280bd74

I have one very happy child who didn’t do so great on the SAT essay.
Princeton Review seems to be keeping the following article updated with a countdown of the number of colleges that still require the essay:
MODERATOR’S NOTE: Deleted the link as it is not allowed.
“There are now 21 schools that require the SAT essay and 23 that require the ACT essay.”
